Reel for spey rod

Good afternoon,

 

Thinking about diving into a two-handed rod/reel set-up (why? because they exist).

 

I've been advised that two-handed line weights are comparable to two less that their single handed brethren --> 7wt two-handed = 9wt single hand.

 

Having seen a few reels on spey rods, they look like regular reels so I presume a fly reel is a fly reel.

 

If I buy a 13-foot, 7wt two-handed rod I think I need look only for a 9wt capable reel.

 

Is that correct?

About right.  Not all reels are equal, so make sure there’s enough room for plenty of 30# backing and bigger thicker fly lines.

You’re spot on with the measurements though.

Jim,

I can tell you I use a IV large arbor reel for my 8w 12' 6''. I don't know the rules, but the spectrum of line weights for that reel is 7-9.  You do need some room for a thicker diameter line, but at the same time those rods are heavy enough. I would go cast whatever you have your eye on and talk to the folks at the shop. Much like single handed rods you want a good balance and jive with it.
