Hey all;
I just moved to Alexandria and was hoping that you might all share
some of the local fishing spots and how to get there. I've been to
Holmes Run (very disapointed) and have heard of a few others.
Gravelly point, 4 mile run, the power plant, and any other location
for trout, smallies, crappie, stripers, or anything else that will
bite. Thanks in advance and hope to see you on the water.

Like Dan, I am a FFF certified casting instructor who is now moving toward
taking my master's exam. As part of my instructor evolution, I need to teach
and teach and teach. That is where some of you can help. I live here in the
DC, am a licensed guide in MD, and I am available to work with beginners or
intermediate students. No charge.

If you might be interested, let me know.

Hi John, Braden and all! I'm very tempted to take you up on it, but I
don't have time just yet. I never learned how to cast very far, nor
did I ever learn how to choose/match flies where I was fishing. That
said, I have been successful enough when told what to use and where to
go. I'm a great roll caster and I can get out about 35', I suppose.
In any case, having lived in the area for 4 years, but only recently
began fishing again, I'm a bit nervous about getting wet in the
Potomac without fishing from a boat but if I've got someone to fish
with to teach me the ropes, I'd feel a lot more comfortable...

All the best,
Rich

Rich,

There are all types of streamers. I don't a picture of mine, but here are some examples off the web. Our tyers can probably give you much better info…

The clouser colors and what looks to be the size in the top left of
this picture has been one of the most successful patterns all time for
me in the past. I've caught everything from brook trout to monster
speckled sea trout on that thing and a lot of good fish in between. I
think in streams where there is a health crayfish population such as
the New River in the SW part of VA this fly is ideal for smallmouth. I
took several 3 and 4 pound plus fish on that fly when I lived down
there.

I am definitely going to try it this year for the shad run. Thanks for
sharing the picture!
