I've been working on a fly design -- a weedless frog I call the Punkfrasch (see the photo for an early model) -- and I wanted to give it ultrasuede legs. However, I don't like the Eastern Trophies style of frog legs (the curvy ones). I talked to them about cutting some custom legs, and I would have had to buy like 500 pairs -- which is way too many. I only need maybe a dozen pairs, total.

After a little searching, I discovered that I could order swatches of ultrasuede online for free from various furniture makers. The Toray Ultrasuede 'Ambience' is my favorite so far, and the swatches come in 3"x5" sheets. Using the pattern I designed (see attached), I can cut 9 pairs of legs for size 2 stinger hookers, with very little waste. I ordered it in white ('Chablis') and yellow ('Sunshine'); it's soft and cuts easily with good scissors. I won't put a link so this isn't commercial, but you can google up some free swatches pretty easily.

It ended up being kind of a neat way to get a little free fly material. You don't have to stick to frog legs, of course -- you could cut claw-dad claws or leech bodies with your swatches. I am really looking forward to dragging these frogs through the weeds come spring.

Nice. I have some surplus ultrasuede in a sort of pale bluis green. If I remember I'll bring it to Feb's Beer Tie
