Over the past week an unusual amount of early season striped bass have been hitting shad darts and flies. This, of course, is common late in the season when the herring start thinning out but is very rare early on when the bigger stripers are around. This is indicating that there are very few herring in the river. In short, these big stripers are hitting lures which gives us a rare opportunity to target some of these larger fish without stooping to cut bait.
So after hearing about several of these stripers today I decided to take a quick foray after work to see what I could troll up from the depths. After about 20 seconds of rowing with my Redfin in the the water I had one on... (see photo)
Oh, and the shad bite was pretty good today also.
See you in the morning.
