Picked up these two today from shore above Fletchers along with a handful of shad. One was deep in the middle of a swing and the other hit as I was lifting my line for a cast when my fly was almost out of the water. Definitely got the adrenaline going. I think pretty much any big streamer with some white will probably do the trick. Swinging flies deep in current has been most productive for me.
When I first got on the water, I saw what looked like some stripers busting herring and was wondering if anyone had ever tried some big poppers early in the morning...might be worth a try...

Still hoping for one of those 30 inchers I keep hearing about...

Nice work, Ben. Curious what time of day and what kind of tide you hooked these on?

I was out early in the morning, just after sunrise. The tide was outgoing.

Should anyone figure out how to vertical jig a weighted fly on a drift in the current you will be rewarded with a 30"+ striper. They are thick.  As are the Ashad on the seams.Inline image 2Inline image 1

Beautiful fish, Mike! Looks like you and Alex had a fun morning! Care to give us a hint as to how much water they were in? And how far off the bottom they were holding?

Thanks!

We found fish in the main channel from the mud/sand bar above the cove to below Walker's Point.  That's anywhere from 7 to 40 feet deep from early to late AM.  We left them biting. :(  Due to the high wind and in order to float  at the speed of the current, at times we had to row .....downriver. The trick seemed to be an aggressive vertical motion with a jig which looked like a herring. The river seemed to be teeming with life as we also snagged herring, smelt and winter shad. The only reason we did not drift further down was due to high wind, white caps and crew boats.  Meanwhile the Ashad bite was happening on the DC side. It was a good day.

I'm working on the "vertical jigging" with a fly rod in deeper water. I think a 450 grain line is in my future. And it'll be more like hopping and skipping along the bottom than actual jigging. It's worked for me in the past few years but the river gauge and volume were lower than currently. The 450 might be the ticket for current levels.

I got to watch Alex and Mike today and see a LOT of stripers landed, it was a great show!

I had to settle for some really BIG Ashad. By late morning the wind was murder with actual chop and whitecaps occurring.

I love Fletcher's.

The heaviest line I have is 300 grain and I'm not in a position to buy another.  I'm wondering if a sinker a few feet above the fly would work?

And for spin fishing, what are you jigging with?  I have several of those swim shad baits in a few different sizes.  Would something like that work?

Thats an idea but I'm thinking that's sinker will get hung up in the rocks a lot  more easily than a striper jig will. With the threat of getting your fly line trapped    In the rocks.

If you try that fish the Virginia side of the lower cove above Walkers. It's not very deep and not so rocky.

We are jigging with bucktail jigs ranging from 1oz - 1.5oz.  Swim shads and jigging spoons will work also.
