[Sardman]

practiced some casting at 4mr friday afternoon. Tida was still very high, but had only a few hours at mid-day.

caught a handful of bluegills near the pilon  and then a small smallmouth near a log.

all using a couple of flies I tied myself.

there was a huge dead fish washed ashore, I think it was a crapppie, but not sure.  

plan to continue practicing during the week after wednesday, so that nobody sees my casting....

Tried some fishing near the bridges at 4mr on Thursday. There were 9 other folks bait fishing with bobbers closer to the bridgeand pulling in smaller fish periodically. I was hoping to catch some crappie but the enormous amount of surface action wasn't biting top water flies or nymphs so I gave up and switched over to a spoon and caught a little smallmouth. Has anyone ever respooled line on a spinning real? The line is so old that it comes out loopy when cast and contracts when drifted. Any insight would be appreciated

You can google this and there should be some videos or sites that describe it - if not, hope this helps.

Remove the line on the reel.  Take it to the store you will be buying new line from (most shops have a monofilament reclamation program - especially the smaller shops).  Buy a new spool of line - which line depends on the size of your reel spool and personal preference - flurocarbon, braid/superline, hybrid, or monofilament (in declining order of price) should all work.  Stren is always a safe bet.  If using mono, I also use Cajun Line.

Tie an arbor knot on the spool (google this - there are tons of on line knot tying sites).  Engage your bail (spinning reel), or start reeling in (conventional/casting) and continue until you have nearly filled the spool with line (it shouldn't go more than the diameter of the spool or you will more than likely have problems with casting).

I've had luck on white woolybuggers (or white maribou jigs) for
crappie. They school, so following the crowd is probably a good thing.

As for spooling a line, Strip the old one off (and cut it up into
pieces as you throw it in the trash). Tie the end on with the
appropriate knot (that you read off the package). I like one of the
premium options for replacement, either the "memory resistant" lie which
resists the corkscrew effect, superstrong (and thus super thing like
spiderwire), flourocarbon (vanish) or if you are brave, the new braided
lines (with a flourocarbon leader). With standard mono, respooling
annually is a good idea. With some of the newer lines, I have found I
need to respool less often.

If you choose to spool braid, be sure to use tape in addition to a good knot when attaching the line to the arbor. if you do not use tape braid can slip around the arbor and elimiate your retrieve.

Spooling a spinning reel is 100X easier than spooling a fly reel because you don't have to level wind.  Well, some spinning reels tend to wind more evenly than others, but no biggie.  With any type of braid you'll need to increase the friction where the braid meets the (probably metal) spool...like cg just said.  I've used the tape that comes with some of the braid types, but I prefer to just spool some mono first, then attach the braid to the mono.  

I saw a dude spooling his snagging rig (paddlefish - Missouri) years ago who just took a lighter and melted the line to the end to the spool, but I wouldn't do it that way.  ;)

Qhat sort of tape? Ice always just put a base of 4lb mono. Tape would be a lot cheaper

I would skip braided because it is way more expensive. If you are not used to it it makes easily wind knots. And if you put one that is too strong for the rod, you may end up snapping it if you snag on something. Just go with a 6 or 8 lb test mono and replace it every year or so.
Also fluorocarbon for spooling is a waste of money, very good for leaders thou.

i have power pro braid on several spools. powerpro provides a small strand of segmented cushioned arbor tape. trust me i learned the hardway.  i place one segment on the arbor, then tie the line on then place a second segment across the line on the arbor, then spool on the line. the line just needs to get traction on the spool.

Also with braid -- 

Be sure to REDUCE YOUR SPINNING REEL DRAG SETTING down from your normal setting with mono.  If you leave your drag the same it will be much too high for the braid, and though the braid might not break as a result (because braid has frickin strong tensile strength) you'll get horrible "digging in" on your reel where the line will trap itself under the wraps below it.  

A lot of people who "hate braid" have probably had this happen when getting hung on the bottom (or something) and may have found that they really liked the braid if they had only set the drag correctly.

A heads up for anyone that parks in the Pier 1/Mattress store lot, the security guard there is cracking down on angler parking. Not sure what authority he has to ticket or get a car towed but I'm not taking chances. It would be nice if the Toyota dealership would stop parking their cars along the street to free up spots by rte 1.

I've recently been parking at the end of Edison St. (continue south on Rt 1, turn right on  Reed Ave, turn right on Edison). It makes it a short walk to either the outflow or the Rt.1 bridge, but it's more centrally located.

Thanks for the heads up, Rob. I've always worried about parking there since there are signs that say you'll get towed if you aren't shopping there. I've parked there anyway, but have been looking for alternates. When I can get a spot near the Toyota dealership, I take that. I've parked behind MOM'S Organic Groceries and haven't had an issue, but they also have the towing threats there too. It's convenient to the discharge, but less so to the bridges. Four Mile Run Park should also be a good, safe alternative. Again, not as convenient to the bridges.
