I may be in the market for a fishing kayak in the not too distant
future. It would be used mainly in the Mattawoman Creek / Potomac /
Port Tobacco Creek; as well as the occasional still water lake or
pond. I have never owned a kayak and am quite green - was hoping to
get suggestions on which to consider. My son and I are both 6'3" - he
weighs just under 200 lbs, and I tip the scale at a lean 325. {~8

Also, besides Dick's Sporting Goods, where would one buy a suitable
kayak is this area (we are located in Southern Maryland)?

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Cheers,
Bob Hendry

Bob,

There are good kayak shops in Solomons and Kent Island. I am sure there are more.

I suggest an Ocean Kayak Big Game...very stable platform for football player types. I ma sure you will get a few other recommendations as well.

The Big Game is a good boat. Also take a look at Wilderness Systems' The Ride and Native's Ultimate series. All are good for man-sized men. A more affordable alternative would be the Dick's house brand (Field and Stream) Eagle line - the Eagle Talon and the Eagle Run. Both are good, solid boats for the price, have very high weight capacities and they come outfitted for fishing.

A WS ride is another good one for stability but sometimes feels like
you are paddling a tug boat.

I am 6'2 / 200 and paddle a prowler. Haven't flipped it in now 5 years
and have been in all sorts of bad weather with it.

Beacon Surplus (I think that is the stores name) Has a big room
upstairs with tons of kayaks-including some fishing. I bought my Ocean
kayak, Big Game Prowler there last year.
