Okay -- So howcomzit my 8-weight has no hook keeper?  Sure, it has an absurdly large stripping guide already but I simply can't be bothered to reach up there to secure my fly every time.  What nonsense.

Of all of the things that tangle your line while fishing.....from a canoe for example, the hook keeper is (apparently) a big offender!

There's something comforting about carrying your rod backwards through the brush, with a 3/0 lead minnow gored into your palm  Of course, I'd be using a 3-weight (max) for such flies since going larger is total overkill, bro.  That's not fun, and by "fun" I mean feeling the fish struggling for it's life on the end of your line!

So I ask you -- howcomzit?

My new 8wgt Sage doesn't have the traditional hook keeper. On either side of the slot on the reel seat where the front of the reel foot goes there are holes for placing the hook in. Much better than the old style keeper.

Maybe your rod had the same.

I've been told that a tiny hook keeper will interfere with shooting your line using bigger rods. I'd rather have a keeper in my big rods and worry about shooting lines later. What about the fold down keepers like the Orvis T3 ?

The EZ keeper works.

Loop it around the reel foot and then attach the hook to the first stripper.

A number of rod builders I know purposely omit the hook keeper on their builds. The reason I have heard is to keep the line/leader junction outside of the rod tip. Looping the line around the reel and securing the hook to a guide will accommodate most length leaders/Tippett combos.

When I build rods for myself, I don't put a hook keeper on.  My line often gets tangled with them when shooting.  I either loop the leader around the reel and back up to the stripping guide, hook it into the reel seat pocket (if that works) or just hold the tippet in my hand.  If a rod has a hook keeper, I will use it, but I don't miss it much if it isn't there.

Btw,  you can always add a hookkeeper on.  A spool of rod building thread, a $1 hook keeper and a few coats of spar varnish and you're set.

Great response to this week's howcomzit folks!  This is very inspiring -- next week will have something to do with "cost saving fly lines (aka WF), crappy uplocking reel seats (or what I call "reel dumpers"), or maybe something about how to pick the best dirty 5-gallon fish bucket for tenkara fishing.

Also add:

Why we should we pay pay for fishing licenses?
Why use, pay for, or tip fishing guides?
Why don't they give away fly rods and reels?
Why would people fish for anything but brook trout?
