For more than the obvious reasons I suggest you avoid the Potomac River for recreational reasons through this weekend.  The Potomac Interceptor overflowed in more than one location yesterday.  An environmental assessment is underway.

Advisory is no contact with the Potomac for the next 72 hours.  Estimated over 5 million gallons on raw sewage entered the Potomac.

I'm not quite certain how the C&O is fed, but I assume by the Potomac. This warning would apply to that to then?

Ugh.  Looks like the river's "closed" til Sunday/Monday.  http://www.dcwater.com/news/listings/press_release651.cfm  The alert says 72 hours, and that the outflow started late Wednesday, but not really when it stopped.  Anyone have more detailed info?

Hopefully there will come a day when it's not business as usual to overflow 600+ million gallons/year of wastewater into the river.  **Grumble grumble**.

There were a bunch of 'logs' floating by yesterday off Ohio Drive.

The advisory also says that the Capital Crescent trail is closed from Fletcher's downstream to Georgetown - would points upstream (i.e. Chain Bridge) be sanitary?

I spoke to some folks at DC Water, and was told that upstream of where the outflow occurred should be fine.  For Fletcher's and points downstream, they said 72 hours from the posting of the advisory, which was 5/1 (no timestamp).  The forecast is for the Little Falls gauge to be at 6' and change, so it shouldn't be a total waste of effort.  Perhaps there will be something interesting trapped in the pools on shore.

Maybe a silly question....but do you think 4mr is safe?

4MR can get pretty disgusting after a medium drizzle, so I imagine it's not looking great.  I think I'll be hitting Burke Lake tomorrow.
