Steve and I were able to get out this weekend to give the smallies a shot. Saturday mornings weather couldn't have been any better. Overcast, not too hot, and a light drizzle. Wish it was like that everyday!

We stayed for a couple hours and got into a handful of fish. Steve took the big one for the day on a crease fly that taped at 20 inches. Can't wait to get back out there.

Beautiful fish!
Where did you fish and can you describe a crease fly?

That's a pig, congrats Steve. I thought I did pretty well with top water this morning on the upper Potomac getting several in the 13-14" range, as well as a grand slam on a single fly (Smallmouth, Sunfish, Fallfish, and Rock Bass).

Thanks Art, and kudos to the photographer who is crazy enough to bring his DSLR wading into the middle of the river.  Great pics, Charlie.

Pics of the fly are attached.  I'm making a deliberate effort to fish flies that I tie and not store bought so I made up some #6 crease flies for the smallies.  A quick youtube search yields some great tutorials on them.  It takes a little more effort and time than just epoxying pre-formed popper heads but I'd rather make it from scratch if I can.

It is a very cool feeling to catch a fish on a fly that you tied.  I caught my biggest smallie, a 20" fat one, on a Murray's Madtom that I tied.  It was a very cool accomplishment.

Lately I have been fishing the Potomac more due to wading access and I don't like being in the kayak when it is 90+ degrees outside.  The water temperatures are lower in the Potomac than the Rappahannock, but they are getting extremely warm.  I hope that they don't get too much higher.  The water flow in the Potomac seems better too.

Are there any other good public Virginia Access points besides Riverbend Park?  The drive is worth it right now because it is fishing better than other places.

A bit late (we were in Colorado with not Internet access) but that's a SUPER bronzeback!  Never thought of a crease fly for smallies, but it's top-water action is every bit as good as a traditional popper. Cool idea.  Also, guess you can change the amount of water it moves by adjusting the lip.

A question: Both knees are gone - first replacement is set for early October, followed ASAP by other.  Walking any distance is just about out of the question for now, but I love smallie fishing on the Potomac.  (Used to walk up from Snyder's to the Horsebacks regularly.  Gave up on Packhorse because of crowds and access issues on WV side.)  Would welcome any suggestions for relatively easy Potomac access for smallie fishing, particularly if it doesn't involve downhill or rocky travel to or from the river.  Also, has anyone found/fished the Potomac white fly hatch in recent years?  If so, where and when?  Hatch used to start any unpredictable time from mid-July to early August.  We could never figure out what triggered the timing.

Paul-Thanks for POR suggestion.  Am jammed up with work for next few days but well may try to get there early next week, maybe Monday or Tuesday.
