Early this morning I found myself connected via a Chartreuse and Pink Clouser what was possibly a personal best smallie.  After 3 big jumps and getting her on the reel, I started to move into slack water near the bank to land her. Lost my footing. Dropped the rod. Scuffed up my palms and knees. And kissed my 20+ year old 9 ft. 7/8 wt. Cabelas Fish Eagle II outfit goodbye. Spent 3 hours scouring the area hoping to find it. It is, more like was, my first fly rod.

So if y'all happen to find it somewhere below Weverton Falls, and possibly still connected to a 18+ inch smallmouth bass, I'd love to get it back. ;-)

Sorry for your misadventure Mark. Almost sounds like an episode of 'This Happened To Me' in Outdoor Life magazine. I feel for ya. I've lost gear that had significant sentimental value and it still hurts to dwell on it. Glad you are okay. That's the main thing. I try to think of the possibility that larger calamities may be averted as a result of smaller misfortunes.

Thanks. You got that right, Dallen. It was a tragi-comedy of errors. I also did a drive by and a little fishing at Snyders Landing just west of Sharpsburg. Nice placid moving water with fish and an excellent place to take out a kayak.  Just got to get past the wedding in October...and then get my own yak. ;-)

A few years back I really had to use the bathroom while in my kayak in the middle of a lake. Inevitably I dumped (the kayak) and sent my rod, prescription eyeglasses, phone, and wallet to the bottom of the lake.  I went back the next day with a snorkle and fins but couldn't find anything. I feel your pain, lots of good memories you made with that rod, but it's a great opportunity to buy some new gear!

I think we all have a story similar.  This past spring i took a plunge into Bull Pasture.  If it werent for a great coat and waders id of been frozen.  My 6 wt sunk in the river.  Luckily my dad was with me, tied on a huge streamer and eventually caught my rod.  We could just barely see the tip about 2 feet under water(in the middle of a 8 foot deep hole).  If he wasnt with me that trip id of lost the rod.

Dave - I have a wedding to pay for in October, so the new rod's gonna have to wait. ;-) Have you since bought a pelican box or a dry bag for your stuff?

Mark,

I'm getting married in 17 days so I completely understand (i'm faced with the challenge of honeymoon in aruba and trying not to spend too much money gearing up for tarpon and bonefish). I now leave my wallet and cell phone in the car, and if I do bring my cell I have a water proof aquapac where I also keep my licenses. I keep my rods held down on the kayak with the bungees when i'm not using them, and my glasses have a strap. I also have learned that it's worth the paddle to the edge of the lake to relieve myself. Also, I'm in the market for a more stable kayak so I can stand and fish anyway. But like you said, with a wedding coming up you have to prioritize...

Congrats! You are in the Order of the Turtle. Sounds like it was a SIK.

Rod and paddle leashes are a necessity and can be made pretty cheap. Think the use of all the leashes and lines through as there is the risk of being tangled in them if you do go over the side. A rescue knife can then be useful if you are.

A urinal picked up from a hospital visit can also be a lifesaver.

I had a paddle leash that recently broke (the plastic connector) and I've replaced with with something better that I recommend, particularly if you're in a SIK like I am. I picked it up from EMS, they're little plastic pieces that are essentially kayak paddle clips. Unlike most of kayak paddle clips though you don't need to drill into the boat. They have a "C" shaped piece of plastic that wraps around the edge of the cockpit and holds the paddle. I use two of them and love them because they hold the paddle very firmly, I don't have to manage the fishing line and the leash, and I don't have to drill any holes. They pretty much look like this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28448 . The only downside is that sometime when i remove the paddle it makes a popping noise if I do it quickly which I worry spooks fish in flat water stealth scenarios.

Congrats on the wedding, Dave. This one will be easy (as the groom) Just wait until and if you're the father of the bride.  ;-)
