Heading to Dolly Sods with a couple of friends this weekend. Anyone have any knowledge of what the fishing is like there? I have seen conflicting reports elsewhere and the only report here I see is a few years old and not promising. I am OK with just hiking, but if they fishing has gotten better in the past couple of years it would be great to fish a bit.

Thanks,

thomas

I was up there in August. Beautiful place to hike. The fishing was not so hot when I was out there. The most promising area I read about was the Blackwater River near Blackwater Falls. It requires a fierce hike down a canyon that could be dangerous. I attempted it with my girlfriend before calling the voyage off early. I didn't want to ruin a good trip with a mishap requiring a helicopter ride out.

But apparently during the summer months they stock that portion of the river with trout. I tried the river upstream and there wasn't a fish to be seen.

I take my fly rod on almost all backpacking excursions, but no longer to dolly sods. Red creek is too acidic in the wilderness area, and while you can hunt and run packs of bear dogs, it's illegal to lime within a wilderness.  Downstream and outside the wilderness boundary near laneville there are some fish but it gets really low and warm in the summer and the locals keep it pretty clear of fish.

I disagree, I've caught Brook Trout in the Wilderness Section of Dolly Sods in Red Creek approx 2.5 up stream from the Laneville parking lot. I was up in the Wilderness Section last July. Just backpacking, didn't bring fishing gear this time but I did see Trout in Red Creek in the Wilderness Section.
