Next, week, I am heading to a family gathering at a property located down river from Front Royal, and just up the bend from the Potomac-Edison dam and Warren Reservoir.  I hope to fish the tailwater of the dam at some point, but also have a bunch of kids who want to fish from the dock above the dam.  Has anyone fished this area before?  Any suggestions on tactics and flies?  And is there a decent chance some 5-yr olds can grab a sunfish or two?  Thanks for any intel.

If this was in a few months, I'd say heck yea, just have them pound the banks with small poppers and they'll have all the excitement they can handle.  Not sure about this early in the season tho.  Anyone else have any thoughts?

Ive started hitting trout streams in central PA already with big streamers for browns. The river chub don't mind the cold, and keep hitting the tails of my flies. So I don't see why sunnies would mind the cold.

Thanks gents, I appreciate it.  Am I correct in assuming the poppers, later in the year, would be to target smallies?

On the SF absolutely -- but you'll get a lot of ambitious sunfish too....which is a lot of fun ;).  And probably a few fallfish.

Depends.  Smaller poppers in bank water or near docks will pull up sunnies.  Larger poppers worked across seams or ledges will pull up smallmouths.

I'd highly recommend checking out the website for harry murray's fly shop.  He does river reports at least every week, will tell you what the smallmouth are biting.  His podcast is great too.

+1 for Harry Murray.  In addition to the fishing reports and podcasts, he is responsive to emails if you have more pointed questions about specific areas.

Lastly, he has a great selection of flies on his site for both smallies and trout in the Shenandoah.
