Has anyone fly fished in Chatham MA in June? My research on the area showed that Monomoy Island for sight fishing the flats is good there.  I am hoping if someone would have some information on:
  •  where to go (what spots to hit) 
  • what to flies work for that time (I think stripers would be in at that time), 
  • is it only floating lines or should I bring sinking tips.  
  • Contact info on good guides. I would much rather DIY the flats

If you're in Chatham on June 19, I highly recommend checking out the public hearing that is being held at the Chatham Community Center (6-8pm, 702 Main Street). They are considering proposed rules for the Atlantic herring fishery that will have a big impact on stripers, bluefish, and others including river herring and shad.


There's a hearing in Philly next week if anyone is in the area and interested in attending, shoot me an email.

You can't get directly to Monomoy Island yourself. You have to either hire a guide or get a boat taxi. It's been too long since I've lived there, so not sure who's operating anymore. For flies, all you really need are chartreuse and white clousers and sand eel patterns for the stripers. An intermediate line would be ideal, but if you don't have it, float will work for Monomoy flats with heavier flies. Bring the sink tips anyway. If you fish the jetties, you'll want it.

Poppers are fun for the bluefish, but very situational to be able to use them. Bring steel leaders if you'll chase them.

Wow am I jealous- I just got back from a few days on the cape and the fishing is picking up for sure! I have spent a lot of time down there but never reaaally fished the Chatham area - although it is productive. If you are willing to travel I can instruct you on some productive areas in Orleans, Sandwhich, and Brewster. The flats fishing can be electric on monomy but I like to concentrate around tidal estuaries to take advantage of rips as well as moving water that can help to concentrate  bait and entice heavy feeding activity. In terms of line I would say floating is okay but intermediate is usually also a safe call. Sinking tips are also a good thing to have if your fishing grab or shrimp
Patterns on the flats and want to get the fly down quickly enough. 

But like I said if you wish for more information let me know and I’ll be happy to expand upon any of the aforementioned areas.

If you are concentrated in Chatham don’t limit yourself to only flats in monomy because there are slot of other offf shore opportunities that can be productive on the right tide.

Lastly, I would prowl StripersOnline forums - look for cape cod reports (can link them if needed) for information as to where the fish are actively feeding.

I was up there last year and found this link helpful.


I would definitely recommend the Brewster flats, whether they're hot that time of year or not I don't know, but it's a pretty incredible spot to wade. Multiple people pointed out to me not to fish the incoming tide there, and carry a compass in case fog rolls in.

Hey Alex, et al,

Well, I haven't been there...yet.  I am going there for the first time next week and hope to wade fish Monomoy myself.

I did find a shuttle service to North Monomoy for $30 http://outermostharbor.com/services/beach-shuttle/.  They take you out in the morning and pick you up at 4:30 pm.  Hopefully I will have a Monomoy report for you in a week.

I too am interested in advice on wading the Brewster flats, so thanks to all for the info.

Also, can anyone steer me to a good night fishing spot?

When you go there, would you mind sending back some intel for Brewster flats, Orleans and Sandwhich?  They all seem within 20-30 min drive from Chatham.  I am willing to drive anywhere to flyfish…

One thing to consider on the Cape is beach access. Many beaches are residents only. Most of the others are ~$20 to park. My experience is mainly mid Cape (town of Barnstable and Yarmouth). 

You generally can't fish at most of the beaches if they're touristy, so find whatever backwoods areas you can, or plan for dawn and dusk if you hit some of the more populated areas. But, inlets and most jetties will generally be ok if you have to fish during the day - just may not be a ton of action.

If you're staying in Chatham, I don't recommend Sandwich. You're in peak tourist season, and that drive could take WAY longer than Google Maps tells you now.

I had the opportunity to fish the Chatham- Brewster area about 11-12 years ago. Couple of things- the Chatham Area boats will take you out to a drop off at their drop point and then you can walk sort of East towards mouth of the channel. In this area if you happened to stick a striper you might suddenly find yourself chumming for seals. If you see a lot of seals you might consider fishing somewhere else although the seals usually swim and feed where the fish are. North of Chatham are the flats inside the cape. I found public parking back in that area (see the attached map) couple  of things to note if you wade  inside the cape. First and most importantly take a compass. At the water's edge before you start waiting out shoot a bearing so that you know that a hundred eighty degrees from that bearing will get you back to shore. I would not depend totally on your phone.  This is so when the fog rolls in you have some idea how to get back to shore. There is no crashing surf to follow the sound back to shore. Wading in the fog is a little disconcerting. You might consider also taking an inflatable PFD just in case. There is a six to eight foot tide in that part of the cape. You need to wade out at low water and you might have a 2 hour window to fish.

I have taken a fly fishing trip out of Chatham the last two summers with a guide named Will Raye http://www.capecodflats.com/ 

Have had an absolute blast both times. He will put you on schoolies till you get tired of reeling them in. Then you can sight fish the flats for the big fish. He will push the boat around and you can see schools of big striper swimming toward the boat and cast to them. Some of the most fun striper fishing I have done.

If he is booked or you are looking for more DIY then take a water taxi out to some of the islands or I have also seen fly fisherman walking into Morris island.

Getting out on a boat is the way to go though and Will is highly recommended.

Well, I had fun on the Cape of Cod but did not take the shuttle out to North Monomoy Island.  Here is an SOL thread discussing it http://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/730179-monomoy-shuttle/

I did fish the south side, Amos Point,  on Morris Island. This is an easy walk from the Monomoy Refuge parking lot and you can go all the way to Harding Point.  There are plenty of good public beach between Chatham and Harwich on the south shore also.   Fish mid-tide with lots of current flow along the shore or ....in and out of the creeks and estuaries.  Also, any rocky point or jetty is good structure.
 
Brewster Flats is so massive as to be intimidating but there are large fish there.  The speed of the incoming tide is challenging so don't get stuck out there.  Fish are Tough to find on foot so we fished it with a guide.  Guys in our group recommend Will Raye also...or consider Alex thru the Black Eel shop in Dennis.  The sight fishing requires lots of sunshine for good visibility.

I caught wads of schoolies 14-20 inches on an olive clouser, also pale pink is good.  I got some large fish on a small green crab pattern slowly twitched on the bottom.  Also got into some fun popper action for schoolies and and try a gurgler too with a floating line.  The big fish can rip off a 100 yard run so make sure your backing is not tangled. A ten pounder can really zip in shallow water,

A clear intermediate line with a long sink tip or head system on an 8/9 wgt is just about right.  You'll make lots of long casts and adding 10 feet multiplies your efficiency.  Use stout flouro tippet, 20lb or 16 lb.
