I took the attached picture from an Ohio fly fishing Facebook group... It seems like a lot of folks up there on Lake Erie are catching these massive smallies in the rivers right now. As I understand it, they come into the tributaries for a bit in the spring before going back into the lake the rest of the year where you can only get them on spin gear.

My parents live up that way. Anyone ever fished this? Looks like a freaking blast. This guy said he caught 20 fish in three hours wherever he was... Definitely going on my list for next year!

Yup. Great lakes tributaries will have Smallies come in during the spring - i have seen it in upstate NY. Have seen steelhead, walleye, SMB and suckers all in one stretch of river.

Throw clousers in deep holes.

Yes they come into the tribe around this time of year and May. Swing flies for them like you would steelhead and you can catch both.

Im a Cleveland Native and spent most of my life in Northeast Ohio. Ive been chasing these guys on the fly since I was very young. I miss the steelhead fishing for sure, but not nearly as much as the small jaws!

Ive got a big trip planned for May and Im really looking forward to spending some time back on the home waters. Don't get me wrong, the lake run river fish are big and abundant, but the pre spawn resident lake Erie fish are of a different class altogether!

Ill keep everyone posted. Wish me luck!

If you take the time to learn the fishery, you can catch monster pre-spawn smallmouth around the mid-Atlantic as well. The season for them in usually late March to late April (depending which rivers you’re targeting).

I started a blog a few months back and we did a three part series on pre-spawn smallmouth. I think there may be some helpful info that could easily be applied to the Great Lakes tributaries as well as tributaries to large river systems around here.

Best of luck.

We're all stories in the end, just make it a good one.

Thanks for the responses and tips, everyone!

Art, looking forward to reading that report. I'll share with my pops, who is taking a 101 class at his local NE Ohio Orvis in a couple weeks. I'm working on getting him into fly fishing... he's intrigued...

Evan, I've been meaning to read your blog post! I definitely would like to get into more smallies here in our area. One of my favorite catches ever was a 12-14ish one near Fletchers I caught on a popper on the VA side of the river. He fought hard and went straight for the bottom. Can't imagine what it's like catching one of those big monsters!
