Fly fishing near Stauton, VA

Going to Staunton VA for a weekend getaway and hoping to get a little fishing one afternoon.  I will have to call the local flyshops to see if the waters are blown out but if they are not, any suggestions?  The South River runs near it in Waynesboro but I know nothing about it.  I noticed Mossy Creek is not too far away but I think I will save that one for another trip.  Any other ideas would be appreciated.  Got to admit that I feel a little uneasy trying new water on my own but I don't think a guide is in the budget.

This weekend? Good luck. Most trouty water systems in the Rockbridge/Augusta/Bath county area blew right past the USGS all-time high marks according to the streamflow tables. Don't worry, ruined my weekend, too.

I wouldn't completely discount the bigger rivers YET for this weekend in that area - particularly for the south to north rivers. It isn't looking horrible (but not great) as of now. The worst part of the storm track is looking to be a bit on the north side, so if that holds, the south-north rivers will be fishable. It'll likely kill the Potomac though.

Mossy is a great summer stream once the hoppers start coming out.  Its probably a little far from there.  But if you make it over near Hot Springs.  There is a weeks worth of fishing and you never have to see the same section of a river twice.

Thanks all for your thoughts.  I did call up one of the local fly shops there and they confirmed that the waterways are not blown out yet but it does depend on what happens tonight.  They gave me a suggestion that I can try some of the higher elevation brook trout streams in the shenandoah national park.  The idea is that they tend to go back to normal levels faster than the lower elevation streams.  So I will be bringing my stuff and crossing my fingers.  I will let you know what happens.  :)

I live in Mt Jackson near the N Fork.  Rains were not too bad. Gauge at Mt J is reading 866 cfs; needs to be at 500 cfs for decent wading.  Might be OK by tomorrow. Not sure about the Park.  There is a fly shop in Waynesboro if you want to fish the South.  It runs right through town, and I'm always amazed how few folks I see, even on nice summer evenings.  Not exactly a remote getaway, but it's much better than not wetting a line.  If you're going into the Park, check with Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in H-burg or Murray's in Edinburg for info.  Good luck!
