I will be out casting Sunday morning by about 8 a.m. if anyone wants to join me. I will be parked at the end of the lower Fletcher's parking lot. If you are working on anything specific with either your single or two handed rod, please let me know. For the two handed folks I though we would work on the double spey. If you think you might want to borrow a two handed rod, send me a note and I will pack a few extras.

See you there, John. I hope to rig up my Vector 8/9 on that 15 foot Deer Creek so you can preview your future fun.

Michael,

Sinking lines do cast differently than a floating lines. When using a sinking line or a weight fly, I use an oval or belgian cast.

The oval happens on two planes - you make a horizontal backcast, and then reposition the rod  up and make a more vertical forward cast.

It's a continuous motion cast. The fly line glides under the rod tip and then curves up as you reposition the rod. Practice by drawing the oval with your fingertip.

With a sinking line, also try and make fewer false casts, and throw a more  open loop on the forward cast. If you want more distance add a haul and aim higher on your release.

If you stop by the river on Sunday morning, or another time, I will be glad to show you.

John

John,
Got a sinking line from you guys a few weeks back.  Danny put on my
reel.

Was fishing @ Chain Bridge few weeks back, with those pink/white metal
flies for shad on my 8 wt.  Had trouble with my long casts.

Any generic idea what I was doing wrong?

I'm normally pretty good with dry flies, normal line.

Could it have been new line, or the shad flies?

Thanks everyone  for coming out today.
Even with the low tide it was a great morning.
I'm up at the Wulff school next weekend, but we will try and cast again in a couple weeks.

Thanks for your generosity of time, tackle and teaching, John. It is great to see so many folks learning and liking the fun and versatility of two-hand casting. And a lighter skagit rig is sure fun.  I am interested to know how far the Wulff world has ventured into the non-vertical casting plane.  And single-hand spey applications.
