One of my fishing goals for this year was to put my kayak in on the Susquehanna flats and try striper fishing.   I was thinking about going up this Sunday, weather permitting.  If you are interested and have a kayak let me know.

If you go, let me know how you do. I have a guided trip booked for next Saturday.

I'd recommend looking out for some fishing reports for that area. My trip ended up getting cancelled a couple weeks ago because according to the guide, the fishing was too poor. He said since the bass don't go up there to spawn, it's only to feed, and neither the herring nor the white perch were running. In the week leading up to my trip, my guide told me none of his guide friends had caught a single fish that entire week. A lot can change in two weeks, though, so hopefully things have changed by now.

The C&R striper season on the flats closes today and fishing reopens on the 16th.  Take a look here for the regs.   I followed the reports pretty closely over the past couple months and it seems that the stripers just aren't there in numbers this year.  There was a decent early run, but lately only a few fish were caught here and there, no real consistency.  The past three weeks has been extremely quiet in particular. Hopefully this is due to inconsistent environmental factors and nothing more -- ominous.

The winter run in VB was lacking compared to past years as well. Still good but not lights out like it normally can be.

Thanks Animal, can you help us read this?  What does "directed fishing trips" mean?

I was reading a few reports a while back and ran across this -- adding to the MRFSS findings.  If you haven't heard of him, Walleye Pete is one of the more knowledgeable guides in the flats area and has been guiding or fishing pretty much every day of the early season for the past 15 years.  Here are his thoughts...

Captain “Walleye” Pete reports:
On Susquehanna Flats this spring, Pete said he had only one day without catching any stripers, but on many days the only fish around were very small local male fish with no numbers of decent fish that usually hang at the flats for a long period of time. Very few larger female fish were reported. Pete is concerned (as are many other guides and anglers). "Along with the depletion of migratory fish it seems like what naturally will follow is less off-spring of migratory fish. The 'bay' fish in the summer are the stripers which don't migrate yet, the younger fish. For about five years now I've seen a big change in the numbers of 'bay' fish in the summer months. When times were good with numbers of fish, stripers would be caught from the Point Lookout region to north of the Bay Bridge all summer long. I have witnessed this range shrink hugely in the last couple of years and especially last year. The shrinkage in range can only equal less fish in a big way." Like all of us, Pete is hoping that fisheries managers will make decisions based on facts to better protect rockfish and help rebuild the striper stock. "We'll see what the future holds. I hope all of the smart folks in positions to make a difference will make the right choices for the fish. Time will tell."

Ominous indeed.
