Since this trip was so awesome I thought I'd share and had a few questions as well. This past Sunday was an incredibly productive day catching really nice size brookies in the lower part of the Rapidan, just off 662. I was able to land 9 or so, what I feel, we're huge natives- 9 inches plus. This was all on the nymph with a hares ear size 14 dropped from a larger bead headed hares plus a split shot. I got into some smaller fingerlings on the top surface, but nothing of size, so quickly changed back. What really made the day awesome was helping two of my friends who never held a fly rod in their life catch their first trout ever. Extremely awesome.

Questions:
we caught a bunch of what I refer to as "chubs" with raised dots on the forehead. Can anyone provide the actual species?

Also, it's cool to fish a tandem rig in those waters correct?

Thanks js

@ Vic,

Don't say that man! Without our trip I wouldn't have known where to go. That's half the battle you know. Let me know if you can get out there sometime before you ship off brotha.

Just let me know when you are going again and I'll make time!  PM what flies worked and I'll tie a bunch up.  Vic

Please don't lay the fish on the ground.  It isn't good for them.  A picture isn't that important.

I'll keep you posted, I need to get my car inspected but the flies include the following.

Sub Surface:
hares ear beaded, size 12
hares ear size, 14/16 both beaded and non-beaded

Top water flies:
- mr. rapidan immitation dry, size 14 (yellow wings)
- march brown, size 14
Also saw that the grasshoppers are out so a hopper patern or muddler would be smart to take. Remember when we saw that dude looking for macros? He had two gnarly giant stoneflies, a hendrickson  (which had black on their back which means they are about to hatch), a yellow may fly that I don't know the name of, and a few others I can't recall. So that should be helpful.

Such an awesome day! This was my first opportunity to trout fish as my Grandpa was always into lake fishing and not stream fishing. I landed a nice 11-12 inch brookie (my first one ever, what a beautiful fish) and a few other small fish on the fly rod. Needless to say, I will be saving some money to get a fly rod setup because now I am hooked! Thanks again Justin!

On the chubs - bluehead chub. I've caught a bunch of those there before. The males have the bumps when they're breeding.

Will, thank you. Maybe that explains why they were nailing my friends rooster tail, the hits were out of aggression. Thank you, and my pa backwoods lingo was actually correct- they are chubs! Right on.
