I thought it would be fun to post in one place all the fish caught on cicada patterns this year. It's still a bit early for the cicadas (I still haven't seen any live ones here in Alexandria), and a lot of the fish in 4MR had no idea what they were looking at, but I managed to fool this guy into biting. For the record, I sighted the fish, cast, didn't move my fly, and he came right up and sipped it. Once the cicadas get going I anticipate that buzzing the fly will be more effective. This guy was probably just curious to see if my fly was food.

Make sure your cicada pattern is in the photo, preferably in the fish's mouth!

Cicadas are already out south and west. I wouldn't expect much in Arlington.
Check out the map in the article:

Also, this sightings map:

They just don't migrate that far from the trees of where they were burrowed.

This one’s floating around today.

Someone’s getting stripers to eat them  ;)

I stayed with a friend north of Charlottesville who lives on a private pond this last weekend, and the brood ii cicadas were out! I've attached a photo of the bottom of the cicada, which you should focus on if you are tying an imitation because that is what the fish often see when they land on the water...  as you can see my pattern was pretty successful!  Again, no movement or twitching of the fly was necessary, just cast it against the bank under a bush or tree and the fish came right up and ate it.  The sunnies tend to whack it and the bass tend to sip it, funny enough. Wish I coulda had the opportunity to fish it on a trout stream, but alas, not this weekend.

I fished the Occoquan Reservoir a bit on saturday. Lots of cicadas out. No fish landed for me though. Would get hits every cast from gils but nothing with enough size to gulp a cicada down. Did see two real big rises towards the end of the day. The later in the day it got, the more bugs on the water there were.

Nice fish Misha
