Hey TPFR!

I remember seeing someone using a mouse fly about 8 years ago when I first started fly fishing.  Today I sat down to try and recreate what I saw, the attached picture is what I ended up with.  It's a chenille tail and deer hair (which I found very hard to work with) for the body.

I'm hoping this may work well around the edges of roaches run.  Anyone have success fishing a pattern like this?  Also, any suggestions on how to improve the next one of these I make are much appreciated!

Great looking mouse! That will definitely catch fish along the weeds at Roaches.

I'm on a a bit of a mission to tie better deer hair flies. Here are a few things that I've learned:

--Make sure to pack the hair toward the back of the hook after each clump. I've never used an actual hair packer, just my fingers, but one way or another... pack the hair.

--Use a double-edge razor blade to cut and shape the hair (I find this step to be the hardest - and I'm still terrible at it). The blade will bend much more than you'd expect - bend it to the right shape and push it from front to back to cut the hair.

--Holding the fly in steam will fluff up and stiffen the deer hair. This can be really helpful for getting the final shape.

I tied some flies last night with similar chenille tails - and was disappointed today when they feel apart after the first or second cast. (Makes perfect sense - just hadn't thought about it). Not sure of how to prevent this, though. Burning the end?

Hope that helps

And here's some inspiration - scroll about halfway down for Chris Helm's Deer Hair Mouse:

Thanks guys.  Shaping with a razor blade is interesting, I haven't heard of that - I just used little scissors for mine.  I hadn't thought about the tail, I'll try burning the tip and let you know if it holds together.

I've found with spinning deer hair that I always have to double the amount of hair that I think I should be using for each spin.  I also generally use G thread on all but my smallest patterns so that I can really torque it.

Also check out the "dirty rat", a marabou and foam mouse pattern.  Easy to tie, and looks really cool in the water.  Can't speak to its effectiveness yet.

I have a dirty rat sitting in my fly box. I have used it a couple of times with out luck. But I plan to test it out over Memorial Day Weekend on a trout stream after dark. I will report back. Here is a link to tying it: http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2010/01/13/the-dirty-rat-by-jackie-treehorn/

Good call on the thread - I forgot to mention that. You definitely need strong thread - I like the Orvis G thread as well.

Yeah - here's an example of using a razor blade to shape the deer hair:

And here's something we can all aspire to (behold the potential for deer hair):

I don't spin deer hair but a tip I picked up from Pat Cohen is to put thin clear cure goo on the bottom of the fly for durability.

Mice flies at dusk are a summer favorite for me.

To get the top and bottom different colors, you don't let the hair spin around the hook, you just flare it. Place a clump of hair where you want it, tie 2 loose wraps around it, then make a third wrap and pull the thread up firmly on your side of the hook shank while still holding the butt ends of the deer hair to prevent it from spinning. This should flare the hair without spinning it around the shank.

And Rob - good call on the CCG!
