Many of you have expressed an interest in learning more about Spey
Casting, and using Two-Handed rods on the Potomac. Therefore, Bert
Brehm and I will be conducting a FREE Spey Casting Clinic Saturday,
July 11 at 9:00AM. This clinic will be held at Fletcher's Boathouse,
and we will be set up at the very far corner of the parking lot,
opposite the Tackle Shop. This event will go on rain or shine with
the only exception being severe thunderstorms. We will bring several
Two-Handed rods and lines for people to try. If you already have a
two-handed rod, bring it along. If you don't, I encourage you to
bring whatever single hand rod you are presently using to fish the
Potomac. These casting techniques can be applied to single hand rods
too, and will certainly add distance to your roll cast and help you
cope with many tight cover scenarios that we often encounter from
shore. There is a long, shallow ledge where we will be teaching the
clinic, so come prepared to wade. Please e-mail me with any
questions, or post them here on this thread.

See you at the Boathouse,

Dan

Dan:

We have Virginia licenses. Do we need DC or Maryland licenses (or anything else) to fish at Fletcher's and the surrounding areas? Thanks.

My name is T.J. Humes... I'll be attending to demonstrate improper
casting techniques.

To fish this area, you need DC licenses. These are available at
Fletcher's Boathouse where the clinic will be held. The cost of a DC
license for one year is $10.00 for DC residents, and $13.00 for non-
residents. The DC stretch of the Tidal Potomac is from Little Falls
(above Chain Bridge) down to Old Town Alexandria. Miles of excellent
water lay between, so this license is certainly worth having. If you
need your DC license, plan to arrive a little before 9:00AM to
purchase it before the clinic.

See you all there,

Dan

This is a reminder that the Spey Casting Clinic will take place
tomorrow at Fletcher's Boathouse from 9:00AM-11:00AM. Plan to show up
a little early if you intend to buy a D.C. license. I am looking
forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

If you don't tie on a hook, perhaps just a bit of fluff, and just practice throwing line, would you really need a "fishing license"?

A big thank you to everyone who attended what as far as I know was the first ever Spey Casting Clinic on the Potomac.  I certainly think that was the greatest number of two-handed fly rods assembled on this river at any one time, and I am excited to see more and more!  Thank you to Bert for his excellent instruction, and to Todd Kim who took some professional photographs of the event.  I wish I had a picture of Todd's face the first time he sent that shooting head across the river with his 13 footer!  Fish of the Potomac BEWARE, you are now in range!  Here are a few more pictures from yesterday.  We will do this again soon.

See you on the River Potomac,

Dan
