Someone fell in. It's a search for the body.

That's horrible. .. my wife and I were out there from about 3:30 to 7:30 yesterday. There were a lot of people still there along with more walking in when we left. High tide was coming in.

On a happy note, the fishing is top notch. My buddy just saw his backing. Big crappie, huge smallies, and big American shad up here at the platform.

This morning my friend and I went there and saw two polices cars and 3 three vans with a note covered  all license plates - " this is family of missing person......."  parked at HC parking lot on MD side. I caught 1 American Shad and lost 1 unknown fish...

Platform is 1/4 mile or a 5 min walk north/up from Chain Bridge.

Walk along be canal until you reach the brick building in your right. Turn left - there is a cement path down to the river. It will open up and thus the platform. Look on google earth/maps.

This was just brought to my attention and I’m asking not out of ignorance but of concern:

Is
Changquing Yang (the gentleman missing) our own Chuq Yang?  I’m cc’ing him here to make sure one our own is safe.

Thanks Eric Biastre for being attentive and seeing this.

I'm alive and well (and only 36 years old).  No relation to the gentleman either.  I may head down towards Chain Bridge later today though.

This is just nuts.  As a long-time boater, it is stupidly easy to wear an inflatable PFD that is non-intrusive (this is the Stearns SOSPenders Inflatable Belt Pack)

I'm going to consider starting to wear mine when I'm on the rocks of Chain Bridge.

Leon, please no "commercial links" - thanks.  I'll actually let this one stay up though, since it is potentially life saving - good advice.  Personally, I prefer a foam PFD simply because there is no possibility of failure if worn correctly.  I spent some good money on one a few years ago and got one that fit very well, so I don't mind wearing it.  Usually, it's when folks try to save a few bucks by purchasing a cheaper, less comfortable PFD that it doesn't get worn.

Please, please get a good, comfortable PFD and wear it at all times if you intend to fish the Potomac or any large, deep body of water from any type of watercraft.

I've been using whitewater PFD's when I kayak fish for several years now. I find them must less intrusive than, say, the Extrasport Angler, PFD line. A good snug whitewater PFD will fit under your rain jacket, backpack, slingpack, vest, or whatever else you like to wear and you'll hardly know it is there. They also sit high so they're not in the way while paddling, wading, etc. I have an Astral Willis and I really like it. The NRS Ninja is a good buy and has been around a pretty long while in various iterations. Current WW offerings from Extrasport are lacking in my mind, but ebay will probably produce some great discontinued models for a good price.

I actually have 2 PFDs. The old (but still working) foam one I put on whenever I'm in a boat and pretty much never take it off until I'm on land. I learned a long time ago that when you're fishing, it's easy to not pay perfect attention to the water you may be drifting through and just don't think it's worth taking the chance.

When I'm wading, I now wear an inflatable belt-type PFD. Since I'm carrying my gear in a sling pack (usually) and I always try to pack too much stuff, wearing the foam PFD just became too cumbersome. Plus, when I'm wading, I'm very aware of the water I'm in (or about to wade into), so always ready to pull that cord. (Or so I hope.)

Shore fishing is sort of in-between. If I'm fishing from Fletcher's, I often don't wear a PFD, but then I'm not in/near fast water. (Maybe I should wear one anyway though.) But by Chain Bridge, I think it makes sense to have a PFD. I usually opt for the inflatable.

Question about the inflatable-style: even though wearing a sling pack doesn't interfere with it when it's not inflated, would it be inhibit it from inflating/working properly?

Thanks.

There are basically 2 types of inflatables: harness style that inflates on your chest and shoulders, and belt style.

The belt style inflates in front of you (like an upside-down "U"), and then you have to take the inflated "U" and put it over your head.  Its disadvantage is that it is not considered effective if the person is unconscious, but it has the advantage of being out of the way (I think some belt models just inflate into a balloon in front of you). So a sling pack probably will not interfere (so long as it doesn't extend down to your hips in front of you)

Leon.
