Hey -- if  is anything more beautiful than the brook trout and surroundings in SNP, Virginia this time of year I don't know what it is.  We spent all Friday-Saturday hiking and fishing and had a wonderful time.  We each caught as many fish as we wanted to catch and probably hiked several miles + elevation and for the most part, were completely alone.

The trout are very spooky with the low water, but that's just part of it.  I found many located beneath undercut rocks this weekend --

Beth managed the largest of the weekend.

Thanks for your post! It makes me want to get up there! I assume they'll be spawning soon. It's better to break from fishing for them while they're spawning.

I love the SNP. I cry a little since I haven't got out there yet this year.

Sure Matt -- It's a personal choice and lot of folks feel that way.  I personally feel that spawning fish are quite easy to avoid, staying out of the water is good practice ALL year if it can be avoided, and choose not to 'close my own season'.  Note that we fish in the SNP more than all other places combined, possibly as much as some retired people.  We love the park streams and really feel like we 'know' many of our favorite places, and neither of us harvest any fish.

It's really rewarding to fish some of the same stretches of water weekend after weekend, throughout most of the year.  You really learn a lot and see so much wildlife, and get really 'in touch' with the stream.  With the occasional rattlesnake, and morels, and BWOs landing on your shirt, there's never a dull trip.
