I will be in Seward, AK from 6/7-14/14 for a reunion and I was wondering
if anybody had and experience/recommendation fly fishing around there at
that time. I have fished Alaska twice before but never in the Kenai
Peninsula. I know that the King Salmon fishing on the Kenai can be
extraordinary but I'm told I will be there a little early to fly fishing
for them in the streams. Looking for advise/recommendations for Rainbow
and/or Dolly Varden fly fishing in that area either as a do-it-yourself
trip or with a guide. Thanks.

If I'm reading your dates correctly,[early June, right?] then you can go after graylings, kings[depending on where] and rainbows with pretty sure success. Though some dolly varden inhabit freshwater while others venture out to see, they usually spawn when fall approaches. Even if you caught some in July, their stunning spawning colors would not have settled in: they would be olive or gray.

Either way, I think you'll have a great time fishing off the peninsula.

Id suggest a guide.  Biggest reason is so you can float the Kenai.  I loved the salmon fishing up there, but the rainbows were probably my favorite. Not the same kind of lower States fishing tho.  Heavy split shots and just floating.  But it can turn up some huge fish.

You're going to be a bit early for the Sockeye run on the upper Kenai, and fishing the Russian River in Cooper landing will probably still be closed.  If you're going to be in Seward, Semaka charters runs a great Halibut trip out of there. Captain Clock is awesome. I did a short video for them last year when I was up there last summer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo_hK1qtFNI). You'll be able to get after some ocean Sockeye for sure.  If you want to float the Kenai for Rainbows I'd probably look to get a guide on the middle Kenai, since the upper Kenai doesn't fish as well until the Sockeye come up.  If you have any more questions I'd be glad to help. I lived in a tent up there from June till pretty much October last year.

Mark, I will be in Seward for a reunion of my old Army unit and part of the activities planned include an off-shore Halibut fishing trip one day and a Salmon Fishing trip (not fly fishing) another day. Besides these fishing trips there are day long activities planned each day of the reunion including a glacier tour, whiter water rafting, and dog sledding. There are 2 days that I will not be participating in these activities, ie water rafting and dog sledding, which I could go fly fishing. It is my understanding that the rainbow fishing will be closed until 6/11 so it may be possible to go fish for them towards the end of the week long reunion. Do you have any recommendations of guides or outfitters in that area?

I worked on the Upper Kenai at Kenai Cache Outfitters and they can put together a solid Middle River Trip for you, but I would book it now. I would request Travis for that trip. He's a VA native who also served in the Army and now guides and lives up there. I've fished with him a ton when we had free time and he is really a great dude. I fyou wanted to do a walk in somewhere, Fly Bob is a local Cooper Landing legend. I was fortunate enough to have him as my AK trout mentor. He's an amazing fisherman and his fly tying/fishing passion will make you want to buy a tent and move out back behind the shop. He is also out of Kenai Cache Outfitters. Bob's trips have been featured in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/07/magazine/the-sockeye-salmons-last-swim.html?_r=0). Kenai Cache also has the only Orvis store on the Peninsula. If those guys aren't available, Mystic Waters runs a good operation.

Mark, I took your advise and hired a guided float fishing trip on the Kenai River with Travis and a wading fishing trip with Fly Bob on the Russian River.  They both send they're regards (see photo).  On both trips we caught plenty of Sockeye Salmon.  After catching our limit of Sockeyes on the Russian within the 1st hr Fly Bob wanted to take me downstream to fly fish for Rainbows but that trek was quickly interrupted by a very large female Brown Bear with a cub.  We stayed upstream the rest of the day catching sockeys all day long.
