A friend has suggested an outing to Lake Mercer in Farifax County.  Any wisdom, experience, reports y'all care to share?

Thanks,
Mark

Lake mercer has some good crappie and ok bass action. Fish the end opposite the damn for best results but watch out for sunken tree stumps. lots of hidden snags there. Good luck!

I have fished it pretty often over the past few years. If you go out on a kayak be careful of submerged stumps, It is easy to get caught on one in a scupper hole or flip over if your not paying attention. The stumps do have alot of snags, but irresistable and looks very bassy. I have lost many a lure and fly on them over the years. Also don't overlook the other sections of the lake I have had success throught the lake.

Thanks, gents!  A friend in Springfield has a canoe we would use there.

I've really done mostly spin fishing there, but yeah, the tree stump area on the opposite side of the lake from the dam is where I like to fish.  It is a hike from the parking lot on Hooes, but I've caught some big LMBs (18-22") there and around other areas of the lake.  One thing that haunts me is one time when I forgot to set my drag and I hooked something that bolted and broke my line.

If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of a bald eagle.
