On Monday Trent Jones and I had the opportunity to fish with Capt. Ed Lawrence of Speckulater Charters down in Gloucester, VA. Thanks to my very thoughtful wife, an early father’s day present was won at the local TU-silent auction held back in March. I finally cashed in on the trip and grabbed Trent for an awesome day on the water. An early morning wake-up call (3am) had us on the water by 6:30. We fished hard, mainly around structure like docks and landed over 5 different species of fish. A 6 or 7 weight rod with an intermediate sink tip seemed best suited for the various water levels and fly/fish size. Capt Ed had some nice hand-tied flies for us, but Trent slammed them on his own chartreuse/white clousers that made me jealous. We saw numerous eagles and osprey, a rather surprising pod of dolphins, sea turtles and many large cow-nose rays. The fishing started out extremely awesome, matching the tide change and Capt Ed putting us in good spots. While there wasn’t an abundance of large fish landed and at times the fishing slowed more than we would have liked, the long drive and full day on the boat sure beat any day in the office.

That was a great day on the water Marek. For those interested, in addition to the Specs and Striper, we also landed some croakers, puppy drum and bluefish….in full disclosure I have caught Brook trout that dwarf the 8inch drum I landed, but it was still cool as we tagged and released a bunch of fish that will help VDGIF study the fishery.

Looks awesome! Gotta love those specks. An 8 inch should be a fun size when they leave the bay in the fall too. Can't wait.
