Dan,
Please add my name to your membership list. I've rejoined FFF. Sorry that I missed the meeting but I was on the Cascapedia River in Quebec. Attached is a photo of a male Atlantic weighing about 15 lbs. Jumped 10 times between hook up and release.

I had a couple of other fish during the trip. I'll make an effort to get by the store within the week.

Subject: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First Meeting A Huge Success
Thank you all who attended the very first meeting of Tidal Potomac Fly
Rodders on Thursday night. Also, a big thank you to Beau Beasley for
coming out to speak. This will surely be a milestone in the history
of the DC area fly fishing community. For those who could not attend,
I will list some of the details. Seventeen members attended (twenty-
one if you count Beau, my lovely wife Melody, our baby girl Virginia,
and myself). Of those who attended, two were already members of the
FFF, and nine others signed up that night. We discussed the overall
purpose of this group, to encourage area fly fishers to fish better
and fish more often by taking advantage of this underutilized fishery,
and to educate others on how to do the same. We also discussed the
next phase of developing this club, and some goals we'd like to
achieve in the next year. A major part of achieving these goals will
be filling the necessary officer positions in the club and delegating
some authority to each of them. A few in attendance at the meeting
expressed their interest in taking a more active role and helping out
in this way, but I also want to extend the opportunity to those who
could not make it. I (Dan Davala) will continue to lead the group for
the next year and will therefore serve as its president. The remaining
officer positions we need to fill are the following:
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Membership Coordinator
IT Director
Newsletter Editor (E-Newsletter - no hard copies)
In addition, I am interested in all who feel they are skilled in the
field of art (drawing and sketching) to aid in the design and creation
of a club logo. The idea I have is a pair of fly rods (one two-handed
rod, one with a full wells grip and a fighting butt) crossed with the
Washington Monument centered in the background. Tidal Potomac Fly
Rodders will be prominently displayed over the top, and a fish (to be
determined - Shad, Striper, or dare I say it, Snakehead) centered
below. I am also open to any and all creative ideas as well. I
believe the Washington Monument is a better choice than the Capitol,
since the Monument is visible from so many places along the river
while we are fishing out there, and it is the most prominent waypoint
in the District.
Those who have skills in the building/maintenance of websites are also
necessary to achieve the vision set forth in Thursday’s meeting.
While the Google Group format has been wonderful for getting this
group off the ground, I believe we need to build a proper website with
a useful and multi-faceted message board, one that allows for regular
posting of fishing reports as well as easy uploading of pictures and
videos, and one that won‘t inundate everyone‘s inbox with every new
post. I see this website as being a beacon to all who inquire about
the Fly Fishing opportunities in and around the D.C. area, whether
they are new to the area, have lived here a long time, or are planning
a visit for business or vacation.
I encourage everyone who is interested in helping with these tasks to
either contact me via
e-mail
daniel...@gmail.com or respond to this post. I don’t wish
for anyone to feel obligated to do any of this, but if you genuinely
wish to contribute some of your valuable time and effort to getting
Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders to the next level, I am grateful for
whatever you can supply.
Lastly, we discussed the importance of everyone who has joined Tidal
Potomac Fly Rodders to officially join the Federation of Fly Fishers.
Of the seventeen members that attended the meeting on Thursday, nine
joined the FFF that night, and two were already members. From the
onset of this club, I have stressed that there would not be any club
dues to collect, and that membership to Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders is
free of charge. If we need to raise funds for a project, we will do
so in another way. However, for us to be legitimately affiliated with
the FFF, and considered an FFF charter club, it is necessary for all
members who have not already done so to join the FFF. Details on how
to join and what you receive for doing so are found here:
http://www.fedflyfishers.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4347When you sign up for your membership, please list Tidal Potomac Fly
Rodders as your Local Club. Since this club is not yet on the list,
enter Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders on the company name.
https://www.fedflyfishers.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4499 This is very
important to the club since the more memberships we provide, the more
likely we will be able to secure grants from FFF National for any
projects we take on.
Here’s the big news. As a motivator for all to join the FFF, I have
secured through Orvis the donation of a Shooting Star 13’6” 8 weight
two-handed fly rod (valued at $435.00) to raffle off at the next
meeting (date to be determined). There is no additional charge or fee
to enter the raffle. The only requirement to win the rod if your name
is drawn is that you produce your official FFF member number. Beau
Beasley will provide a signed copy of his book “Fly Fishing Virginia -
A No Nonsense Guide” as a second prize.
Once again, thanks to all of you for making this club a reality. I
enjoyed seeing everyone at the meeting, and even more so, I enjoy
running into you all out on the River. I believe this is only the
beginning of what will be a prominent force in the FFF, and a blessing
to this River, our Potomac. It is our River, and we are its
stewards. Let us leave it better than we found it.
See you on the River,
Dan Davala
