I'm looking to take a fishing trip during the last week of September or the first week of October. I don't have any particular target species in mind, but I'd prefer not to go after the "small" stuff. I love catching wild 7" brook trout, but would prefer to target something more exotic. Could be anything from Bonefish to Marlin to Steelhead. The main problem I'm seeing is nearly every lodge, service, etc. caters to groups or at least pairs of anglers in order to make the costs reasonable, and I don't have any friends that would go on a trip like that with me. I've found a few hosted trips that fall in my price range (preferably <$2500 for 4+days fishing and lodging), but the dates don't work. Any suggestions where I can look?

Thanks!
Jeff

Jeff....Why not head down to the Outer Banks of NC and charter a day with Sarah Gardner or her partner.  You could then kayak fish the area the next few days.  If you waited until late October you could go down to Harkers and fish for false Albacore.  You could probably get a hotel in the area pretty reasonable too.

I was going to suggest a trip to OBX or somewhere like Beaufort, SC. I highly recommend Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort. They're an Orvis endorsed fly guide and do an awesome job. The trips are really designed for one angler and one guide, too. Charter someone like that for a full day and a 3/4 day, and fish from a kayak the other days. September is a great month down there for redfish, ladyfish, and specks in the flats and a guide could put you on tarpon that time of year too. That time of year is off season, too. I rent a house down there every April and fish redfish and usually pay <$1000 for the week for great digs with a deep water dock. Rent a place on VRBO for best prices.

Check out Deneki's Andros South Lodge for bonefish, it can come close to your budget and they accommodate single anglers. I have no experience with their lodge but occasionally browse their blog, which has very useful casting and rigging info as well as tons of fish porn.

Had a buddy go down to Andros South earlier in the year. He loved it.
Tons of bonefish and some huge ones as well.

Jeff,

What about doing it Jimmy Buffet style? Fly into Miami, get a cheap
car, get a cheap place, maybe in the upper keys, get two bottles of
Rum (one light, one dark), and book a guide or guides for a few days.
Some guides will offer multi day discounts (Captain Mark Hall comes to
mind). Hopefully you fish so hard your lodging will just be a place to
crash. You can go for Peacock Bass, fish the everglades, and go for
big saltwater fish...or pick one of those and dial it in over a few
days.

If you have any cash left over, head back up to Miami for the last
night, that to is a target rich environment. If you are married then
treat Miami like your fishing and just practice catch and release.

Whatever you decide,I would book sooner than later and spend the next
few months getting ready for an awesome trip.

+1 to this idea - hit Islamorada, fish the backcountry flats - tarpon, bonefish.  The flat boats there are perfect for a single fisherman with a guide.  Email me if you want a guide recommendation.  Chica Lodge would probably be a good place for home base; not cheap, but that time of year won't be peak season.
