Trip Report: Cook Lake

OK, I recognize that there is a big difference between a perfectly placed dry fly on a pristine mountain stream, and a clown egg in Cook Lake.  But hey, fish where you are, right?

I saw that Cook Lake was stocked last week, and out of a desperation to fish went out there today for an hour or so.    Caught four recently stocked rainbows on a chartreuse clown egg.   Also fished black and chartreuse woolly buggers, with no luck.  All fish were caught on the downwind side of the lake (today the wind was coming from the south), no more than 15 or 20 feet from shore.

I suspect those fish will be cleaned out pretty quickly since it is not a catch and release location, so get out while you can.  

One thing I will note - with all the work done on the lake, access is incredibly easy.  A nicely paved trail runs around the entire lake.  So if you are of limited mobility - or know a fishermen of limited mobility - this is the place for you.  In fact, I'd guess the entire perimeter of the lake is accessible by wheelchair.

I grew up fishing Lake Cook, happy to hear they’ve renovated and you can still catch some fish. Curious if they still do the kids fishing program that they ran in the 80’s and early 90’s. Fun stuff and a great place to practice casting.

They've made it very wheelchair accessible with a couple of fishing piers/platforms.  The place has been really spruced up.
