Heading for Wilmington this weekend mostly as driver/dog walker so my wife can do triathlon training swims/bike rides, but I'm bringing fishing stuff with.

Who's fished down there? What's your best rec for easy access/easy wading or shore fishing? I'm fine with anything from bass pond to marsh/flats to beach fishing, but have no idea what I'm getting into down there. I'll be rolling down with a 9 weight, with option for full sink or floating line., could bring a 5 wt or 7 wt as well.

There's an outside chance I try to link up with a guide for an early AM or late PM run one of the days - anybody have guide recs?

Thanks in advance!

I fish with Allen Cain a couple times a year.. really good friend and will get you on reds, speck, or albies if they’re on the beach.  Always a good time.

I did indeed fish with Allen; I had actually already emailed him to set up a trip by the time I posted here - good to get the instinct verified though.

Got to NC Thursday night late, so Friday we did a short trip to catch the flood tide on the marshes on Masonbro Island - I was staying in Wrightsville Beach, and that was the closest spot. The tide was good, but water was cloudier than usual, and the fish were not really in full-on happy feed mode. I put casts to 7 fish; a couple just turned the wrong way, the zig-zags were pretty unpredictable. I spooked the sh*t out of 2 more - I mean full-on, hit them on the back & watch them freak out spooks.  2 fish took the fly - the first was at about 45 feet, good cast, good presentation, I just blew it with a trout-set. The 2nd was epic; had a fish work to within about 12 feet of the boat, I basically dapped the fly in front of it, he dropped down low like he was going to avoid it, then turned up & just slammed the thing. All I could do was pull back, and I missed him.

Tide dropped on us after that, and with no albies inshore yet, that was that. Allen did show me a couple spots to hit without a boat, just to get something caught, and sure enough, found ladyfish crashing bait in a foot of water under a bridge that night at about 11pm, and got one.

Would HIGHLY recommend Allen for a guide down there, and suggest the trip for anybody wanting to try out sight-fishing to salty fish. Good guide, good company.

Welcome to fishing for tailing reds.  You have a 66% chance of being wrong when you guess which way they’re headed.  It’s a blast, and next to albies, my favorite kind of fishing.
