Tidal Basin Night Bite

Not long ago a night session went down at the tidal basin.  Pretty sure I lost two carp.  One which took a serious run and broke me off at my leader tippet connection within under 10 seconds.

I did manage to fight and land a mean catfish though.

I didn't count any rays so I wasn't able to distinguish whether it was a blue catfish or a channel cat.  I'm leaning towards blue as almost every other catfish I've caught have been channel catfish, smaller, and had hints of tan / brown and dark spots.

Channels have straight anal fin. Blues have a curved. Hand is in that fin. Either way that is one solid fish. Toughest fighting fish here in my opinion.

How were you fishing it?

Sinking line? floating? out into the potomac or in the basin on the backside of the bridge?

I might swing by to fish the tidal basin after work if anyone wants to join me.

I fish a full sinking line.  I cast out and not along the walls within the tidal basin. Generally there is a 70 % chance of snagging if you let the fly hit bottom.  Use dark flies at night.  Purple, black, and olive work well.  Fish the tides and have faith in the night bite.
