Hey all,

Heading to Strong Island this weekend. Any one have any locations I should check out in the area? I'll be staying near Jones Beach, so that's the first area I might try to wet a line, but I have no real idea about Long Island and or fishing in the sea. I plan on bringing my 8 weight and my bass box, so mostly clousers, streamers ect.

Never fly fished in the ocean, so any tips/pointers/locations/ideas/FLIES/ is incredibly helpful.  Would be happy to hook into any fish. Thanks.

Check out the west end of Jones beach. There is a jetty at the far corner that I've caught some decent stripers off of. I usually go with a chartreuse and white clousers there. Its a long walk  (probably a 1-1.5 miles) from the parking lot but you will probably only have to share the entire Jetty with one or two other fishermen when you get out there. I would also consider parking at the boat basin at the west end and walking to the Meadowbrook Parkway bridge as it crosses over onto the barrier island that is Jones beach. Its certainly a shorter walk than going to the jetty and I've seen some nice fish there but only ever caught flounder. Either way, I would use google maps to get an idea of these areas before heading there. I usually try to fish after slack tide as the tide starts going back out to low tide. Good luck!

If not too late, strongly recommend stripping basket for the ocean.  Line tangled around your legs is no fun.

If you didn't bring one, I have heard people borrowing baskets from CVS or WalMart and using them.  It's what I have heard, no firsthand knowledge.

I would just buy a solid rubbermaid tub and about a 36" bungee strap (or 2 smaller ones) and away you go.  You can insert various "fingers" through the bottom, but that's up to you.

Nedak once confessed to me at Whitlows (while sitting on a barstool) that he a did a nickel in Memphis for B and E.....so keep that in mind when he says "borrow from CVS".

You might be able to search past messages, but building one of these was covered.

The best idea I saw was using cable ties for the fingers.  You need drain holes anyway, so you put a cable tie through two of the holes and tighten it enough for the remaining tine to stick up.  I don't know how many you need, but keeping the line from getting tangled (either in the basket or at your feet) will save you a lot of time on the water.
