This winter - Pike/Muski/walleye are on my bucket list for a long time and I am trying to get information around here in MD. I have heard that we can catch these kind fishes in North Potomac River - it is long river. The fishes could not be near Dickson area because they have to stay in cold water. Anyone who knows the spec area/access point, flies - clousers or deer hair popper? Any tips or links?

Thanks

Richard

I've spent most of my work day looking into this.  I'm really itching to get out and target some Walleye as well.  I found some information about Walleye fishing near dam #4 up in Maryland, but it seems like everything I'm reading is for fishing from a boat.  Anyone have experience on that part of the river - are there sections that are wadable / good for fishing from shore?

Looks like where Difficult Run enters the Potomac near Great Falls is also a good spot for Walleye.

For walleye - It has to fish from boat because they hate the sunlight and swim in deep water (where the level with less lights) - I was told about that.

Difficult run - I have been there several time for whitewater kayak. We have to get there by kayak or hike difficult run trail at VA side.  Unless you know the secret trail from MD side?

Anyone know about any areas on Upper Potomac river?

I think it would be tough to catch Walleye with a fly rod. The standard way to catch them seems to be slow trolling a in deep water or drifting with a lindy rig tipped with a minnow/leech/work.

Pike are easier, if you can find them. I used to catch them in MN with minnows on a spinner rig (slow trolling) and spinners/daredevil spoons. I'd imagine that anything flashy would do the trick. Flashy deceivers would probably be great for them.

There are muskies in the river just upstream from the Shepherdstown boat ramp (a rocky mother if the water is low). I did not have a fly rod, but the gent I fished with catches them there from late Spring to late Fall. We saw one, about 4 ft long, approach  my friend's lure as he did the figure 8 on his retreive. Only one we saw that day. I think a big Half and Half would have gotten that fish to eat.

have seen some big muskie on the deep & slow sections of the upper potomac, between great falls and point of rocks. (sure they go all the way up, but i rarely get the chance to fish between point of rocks and hancock) A couple have chased fish i had hooked but never had any luck hooking one on the potomac. That was all during the summer months though and really don't know much about their movement this time of year. probably need a boat, which is a whole different bag of tricks in January.

I know people have been catching some nice walleye up around the dams on the susquehanna and fletcher's supposedly has a couple here on the potomac, but never had much luck this far south. You can also find walleye in several area lakes, tho never seen anyone do anything with a fly rod. as john mentioned, deep fishing a live minnow is usually the best technique for them.  good luck.

in terms of pike... don't know of any northern pike in the immediate dc area. heard of them in some of the high mountain lakes but believe most are stocked w/ chain pickerel. only time i've caught any kind of pickerel down here is accidentally while trout fishing downstream of stocked reservoirs, fun little surprise on a 3-4 wt.

Occoquan reservoir has Norther Pike. I caught a 12 pounder there years ago. Not on a fly rod.

Burke lake has Muskie.

Good hunting

I caught a walleye at gravelly point last year after Thanksgiving while striper fishing.  I wasn't paying attention and damn near grabbed it by the lip.  Thankfully there was an old timer there who was paying attention and yelled at me.  He mentioned he caught walleyes at gravelly in the past.

Thanks for the tips everyone.  I'm interested in Burke Lake.  It looks like they won't be renting boats again until the spring - they have a few piers you can fish from though.  Are there any trails around the lake where you could walk around and access the water from different points without a boat?  Anyone have experience there?

Thanks,
Paul

There are a few "fishing ports" around the lake, though I think they're designed with spin fishing in mind. If I remember, they're almost like walls that you stand behind, but I could be wrong.

There's probably good access from the dam, but I can't say for sure. I think the best access with a fly rod is probably the fishing pier.

I did hear that the water levels are really low there, so that might change everything. Certainly worth checking out. It's a pretty lake.

And here's a handy PDF map of the lake:

Right now the lake is down 4-5 ft due to construction on the dam.  I went out there yesterday to practice some casting with my new DH rod.  Since the water is down you can access a lot of areas that you normally would not be able to get to.  The construction is supposed to last a few months and I am guessing they are going to try and finish before spring arrives.  As far as fishing it when it is back up to normal they do have a trail that goes around the whole lake its about 5 miles long.  There are a few places that you would be able to cast a fly but much of the area around the lake is heavily wooded.  The area by the dam and the completely opposite area on the top of the lake (bordering burk lake road) are two areas that come to mind.  I wouldn't recommend trying either place to cast a fly.  If your on the dam you will have a heavy stream of hikers and bikers behind you at all times, which would be pretty annoying to keep looking over your shoulder and wait for a break in the action to cast.  The upper part may be a better place to try but I always see a lot of people fishing that area and lots of kids running around.  Your best bet may be to try it out now while the water is down or wait till the lake is back up and rent a boat.  There are a few spots where you might try and wade but I am not sure if you are allowed.  I have seen several people try to swim while having a picnic and be told they were not allowed by the park staff that patrols the water on a boat.  I was wading yesterday but knew no one would be out there to chase me off.

As far as fishing it I have moderate success at best.  I have caught bass, sunfish, and catfish, but never had a really great day on their.  I tend to stay away now as I have found better spots that are not as pressured and crowded.  I have talked to some guys that have really caught some nice bass (7-8 pounders) but have yet to have that success my self.  For the musky I have never caught one, but have never targeted them either.  I was out on my kayak about 2 years ago and a ranger came over to check my license.  We talked a bit and he told me that the musky were not doing well according to the electroshocking survey they did that year.  Then again that was two years ago maybe it has gotten better or maybe they increased the stocking numbers.

Thanks all your feedback...After google the map, I think I get an idea where I like to fishing with my inflatable boat when the weather is better - between Shepherdstown and dam 4. I will report it after the event!

Thanks

Richard
