I was thinking about trying to wade this part of the Potomac in the
coming weeks. Has anyone fished this area, is it okay for wading?
Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

Brian,
You might want to add this book to your library, "Wade and Shoreline Fishing the Potomac River for Smallmouth Bass"  by Steve Moore, ISBN 978-0-9823962-5-4. This covers Chain Bridge to Harpers Ferry. He has a series of books covering local rivers. His number and email are 703 638 0359 and steve...@catchguide.com repectively. PP 93-98 cover this specific area, which receives a good rating for wading and fly fishing.

As an interesting aside, his father is Col. Hal Moore, who was featured in the film, "We Were Soldiers Once".

During fairly low water times (late summer), I've waded along sections of it upstream from Riverbend Park - plenty of bass around those rocks. :-)

Never waded it this early but when the water is low, its a really nice
safe and fishy wade. I have crossed to the marlyand side and had good
results over there as well. I know its a haul but I know wading the
Rappahanock in Fredericksburg right now would produce good amounts of
fish as well. Worth looking into.

Brian,

Riverbend park was one of the first places I tried fishing on the Potomac.  I've only been there twice last year but here's what I learned.  The deeper water off the main section of the park see the most pressure and are not the best areas to wade. I skipped the main section of the park, and left the car at the Nature Center.  From there it's a bit of a hike down to the water, but I think it's closer to the fishier areas upstream of riverbend itself.  It's definitely a much nicer hike.  On a lower water flow there are a number of gravel bars or outcroppings to stand/wade to get away from the wooded banks and get in a decent backcast.  During mid to higher flows, there are few wadeable areas so keep that in mind.  It may be a better wade in the midsummer lows.

Riverbend also seems to be a great place to take or rent a kayak.  I was going to give that a shot in my inflatable when it warms up a bit.  Best of luck out there.

Steve,

Thanks for the insight. I think waiting for some lower water levels
in mid summer is the best approach but I may hike around and check it
out in the coming weeks if the rains hold off.

Charlie, where on the Rappahanock would you recommend is a good place
to wade in?

Either below or above the Route 1 bridge depending on what you prefer.
Below has more backcast room and above is more rocky/rapids and rock
hopping. It is definitely a pretty area and should hold shad and
stripers all spring.

I was guilty of skipping many college classes to head down here and
fish for shad here.

I would be up for a run to Fredericksburg to fish the Rapp for shad and
stripers soon- I can drive and pay gas if you have knowledge of the
water....

Thanks
