Hey guys,

I am trying to plan a half-day-ish float on the Potomac. I was
thinking Point of Rocks to Algonkian?? Or would I be better doing
Algonkian to Riverbend? Most likely, this will be an afternoon into
evening float.

Any tips, hints, advice welcomed.

Thanks!

Many unknown variables could affect the advice given.  Are you fishing? Canoe or kayak?  Point of Rocks to Algonkian is a bit more than a half day unless you paddle like heck and don't fish. Believe it or not wind direction makes a difference on this stretch. Strong South would lengthen your day.   Algonkian to Riverbend is more scenic, potentially fishy and faster. Closer to the half day.  Good luck.

Floated point of rocks to whites ferry on Saturday was about 6 hours of rowing non stop and into wind. Water is low and slow. The waterproof map I got at riverbend visitor center was a big help in showing us where we were and how far to go. Saw more bald eagles than fish.

Agree with Animal except on the time.

POR to Algonkian is a loooooong float. At least 8 hours.

Algonkian to Riverbend will take a solid 8 hours.

Of course, both can be done quicker if you don't fish.

While I have found it to be not as productive as the higher up parts
of the river, Violet's Lock to Swain's Lock is a pretty good half day
trip. Depending on water levels, it can get a bit boney, but fishing
it take about 4-5 hours. Just be sure to stay river left at the end or
you will have to come back up the river when you round the corner.

Depending on where you are coming from, this is a bit closer to the
city.

All the best -

Zach

I know Algonkian to Riverbend is about 9 miles. You also have a lot of slow water at Algonkian to paddle through. I like to give myself about an hour for each mile of river I float on rivers like the potomac. I havn't done it myself but I know a popular float is Brunswick to Point of Rocks. I believe it's 6-7 miles. There is also a launch point at Lander, in between these two points for a shorter float.

Always been curious about doing a multi-day trip from Harpers Ferry
down to somewhere around Riverbend/Algonkian.

Anyone ever do this?
