Cleaning out an old shed at my place and came across a real gem! 1920-30s? Abercrombie and Fitch split-cane bamboo rod. Was inspired by Duber at Orvis to catch a fish with it...got lucky.

Cool Rod and great work putting a fish on the end of it!  On a separate note, I believe I have the same reel.  It was given to me by my boss whose dad owned it previously.  Heavy, but its good for shad.  Haven't spent any time researching it.

I am pretty sure the reels are different.  The other post looked like it had a Pflueger Medalist, probably a 1495.  Yours is a South Bend finalist.   The Medalist was THE american made reel from the 1930's through the 1980's. Then production move to Japan and finally to China.  Very nice reels.

The South Bend Finalists were not quite copies of the Medalists, but similar.  The one you have is one of the nicer ones and has a decent drag.  The benefit of the Finalists is that you can club a fish or fishing partner with it and not worry about the reel.  They are heavy and solid.

I love seeing vintage tackle in use.

The medalist is definitely one of the most ubiquitous fly reels of the 20th century. They are a work horse!

Can't tell what rod you have from the photos but A&F was High Society's sporting goods store and a lot of the upper level bamboo rod makers sold through them. You MIGHT have something valuable there. Whatever the make it won't be junk.

I've used a medalist on my 5wt that I picked up for $10 at a fly shop in new york 4 years ago. Its performed superbly on everything from brookies to golden dorado, love the reel, but its tough finding spare spools.

how does the bamboo rod behave, like glass or faster?

Carl, You are absolutely right.  Dug it out and a Finalist indeed.  It's far too heavy compared to my other 6 weight so it stays in storage and only comes out for the run.

You can pick up spare spools for Medalists on eBay practically every day. Bamboo can fange from stiff to noodlely depending on the tapers and whether it's made well or poorly. Well made rods will alway feel alive regardless of the taper. In that regard well made glass rods have a similar quality. Graphite feels dead in comparison. That's not knocking graphite. It's just what you'll notice when comparing the three materials. I fish all three and the feedback you get from casting glass and grass is more pronounced than graphite. it's easier felt than explained.

Pictures of the full handle with winding check and the ferrules would further help identify the rod but you have a Yellowstone Special. A middle grade trade rod likely made by Montague or Edwards. So no fortune sitting there but still a very nice rod.
