I hope some of you will come out to Waynesboro this weekend for the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival. It's going to be a great show. Come and see us at the TPFR tent.

I will be there by 5pm or so this Friday staying till Sunday evening. Will have a friend with me that will probably join. I will be at the Spey casting demo Sunday at noon, will stop by the tent then to say hello and introduce Walt.

It will be good to see you there Mike.  John and I are giving the Spey demos, so you can introduce your friend right there on the water.  Also, John and I are conducting morning classes each day for the festival - check out the classes link on the VA Festival Site Here.  Looking forward to seeing many TPFRers this weekend in Waynesboro!

Beau Beasley has assembled and grown a fine VA fly fishing event. Loaded with informative fly fishing talks, tackle, instruction, legends. I have attended each festival since 2007. TPFR participation gave this festival a special, unique cast, pun intended. Over the years the number of wives, squeezes, families and children attending has quickly grown. Bargain prices for tasting wine, casting instruction or buying flies. Adultly volumed bluegrass music.  Mssrs. Davala and Bilotta do their ever superlative bests as spey and fly fishing ambassadors. Monticello is 45 minutes away going east and the American Shakespeare Center is 15 miles west in Staunton. Hope you can join the festivities.

You'd think they'd pick a movie that isn't on Netflix Instant...

I plan on being there Sunday bright and early.

Taking my new yak out on Saturday.  Anyone care to join me. First time should probably be on a lake. Burke Lake maybe.

Hey - we did the fest this weekend for the first time.  We couldn't resist hitting Buffalo Creek, VA yesterday, but we were there on Saturday.

Highlights:

Walt Cary Popper demo -   We bought a 4-5 year supply and watched him demo his technique.  His "particulars" remind me a lot of Beth's grandfather.  Quite a character.  I've never seen a demo by a man with known citations from VDIF.  When I rode bicycles a lot, I knew a guy who had a speeding ticket framed (43 in a 25 mph zone)....so this is probably similar.
2.  Dan/John's spey demo. "Aim for the inflatable dinosaur" should be up there with the 180-degree rule in spey casting books.  Being a slacker = good.  I'm pretty sure if I had a spey rod my life would be over.  Like the naked castaway guy.
3.  Ed Jaworowski - more coffee Ed?  Nice guy, high-energy.  Slack = bad (casting).
4.  Hotel cinnamon rolls - I must have stolen a dozen of those things on the way out.  The truck was full of 'em. Why?  Because it's classy.  Luckily, you no longer have to declare pastries when entering VA/MD (as of 2012).
5.  Hotel light bulbs, soaps and towels - see #4.  Class -

Oh, I lost a rainbow at my feet at Buffalo on a traditional winged wet!  Small guy.  I refuse to nymph if I think I can get one on the swing -- Beth caught and released one on a woolly bugger.  We had hits along the downstream walk (along the "Kynes" road...whatever it was) but missed strikes.  Dave J. - thanks for post on your trip out there.  We enjoyed the stream quite a bit ;).

Buffalo Creek is reddish-brown more than anything.  Nevermind the fish.

Trophy fish citations are a bit different from traffic citations. My mother got a citation for a striped bass from Smith Mountain Lake a few years back and it is a good thing - it means you caught (I think) a 95th percentile or better fish in length or weight. They give you a nice little certificate.

Oh really?  My thinking was a "citation" as in violating the size restriction or limit or something.

Nevermind!  Thanks for pointing this out -- I need to learn this stuff.  Maybe I'll quit while I'm behind.....

Dan, Melody, John, Tom & Tracy, and I were all there representing TPFR, and we had the two Bob's and the Tidy's holding it down for the FFF. Thanks to all of our volunteers!

We were able to introduce fly tying to several people and give some free casting lessons. A few of you guys stopped by our tent to hang out and have a beer or coffee, which was great.

But I must say the highlight of my trip was getting completely bombed at the banquet and winning a silent auction with some sick original artwork. The attached photos are of a painting by Nate Karnes and a base done by Dan Neuland.
