I went to Holmes Run today (02/19/2013) at about 4:15PM.  I fished the first few pools using a "booby bugger" (patent pending (not really)).  I had a few bites and yanked out "Holmes the Trout"  (8 to 9 inch trout).  I am going to try to attach a picture (sorry if I botch it).  The picture us blurry. I thought I was going to drop Iphone.

A neighbor told me that Trout Unlimited stocked Holmes Run today (2/19/13).  We ran down there this evening to check it out.  My buddy forgot his reel and ran home while I fished (it was nice of him to, basically, give me a ride).  I did not see any activity in the first few pools.  Frankly, I was not sure the intel was correct. The light was fading fast, so I just stripped the bugger in the first few pools and practiced casting.  Then, "Holmes the Trout" tried to run away with the bugger. Thanks to Dan at Orvis for teaching me how to tie a Woolly Bugger this weekend (I added some pink fiber that I had at home to the tail (pink for the "booby" foundation).  I was glad that Dan still had his tying table set-up after his class when I showed-up. I enjoyed catching a fish on a new fly made-up with garbage left over from the first fly I ever tied (a pink scud).  Dan - You should leave the tying table-up all the time (perhaps in a corner).  If only I had the foresight to bring a beer or a flask, we could have started our own beer tie (corporate liability waiver also pending).

Thanks again for all those that share timely and complete info. on this list.  I really enjoy the stories, information, and try to share each time I have information.

Go get Holmes the Trout! Urban trout fishing with a stench (I live on the Pike, so I can disparage it)....  No voodoo stuff or other odd stuff located on this recon.
- Tommy

Hey Tom,

Love the post!  Glad to hear you had a good time.  I have been meaning to go to Holmes Run  but have not yet.  I will correct that THIS year!

Now a question for everyone else,

Can anyone confirm whether Holmes Run was stock recently?

TU's website does have stocking Holmes run and Accotink schedule on their calendar on 2/19, but that doesn't mean it was actually stocked that day.  I made that mistake on the first stocking this winter, when I went out I found no fish.  I learned later that the stocking was delayed due to warm water temps.  I found the DGIF website to be more accurate, and it does not list either Holmes or Accotink as being stocked this week.  Not sure why it would have been delayed this time, but I am sure there are some fish left at both places from the first stocking.

think it has been mentioned before... but the va dgif site has been inconsistent w/ posting the stocking information for holmes and accotink over the past couple years.

would be nice if they did indeed move up the second stocking to the middle of the season, in the past they usually save the second for the week before water temps hit 70...  if we could only convince the lake barcroft folks to somehow convert the outflow to a bottom release... :)

regardless of stocking though, there are fish in there all winter... from the pike to beauregard and during years when there's been a couple high water events they spread out all the way down to Duke st.

I am pretty sure Holmes Run was stocked on the 19th My buddy who forgot his reel, went back the next day. He landed two good sized fish/trout and lost one. He is new with the fly rod. He, however, is not new to fishing. We are both pretty sure it is now stocked. Go get em, before it is fished out. Tommy
