I've noticed a ton of gar in the water recently. So I went and tied up some rope flies on Saturday, picked up some 40 lb tippet, and spent Sunday afternoon sight casting to them from my SUP.  I hooked into 3 and landed 1.  They are tough to "hook", but chased the fly right up to the side of the boat, which was pretty entertaining.

Very cool. I was fishing the outflow at GP on Saturday and had about 3-footer bump into my leg in the eddy by the bridge. He surprised me so much I just about peed my waders.

As a worthy re-mention, please remember to bring scissors with you when fishing rope flies for gar.

Often times the rope tangles their mouths so effectively when you release them they still can’t open their mouths.

Please be aware that this can be an issue for them if you’re not careful.

good point, I'd also recommend gloves, since the scales and teeth can do a number on your hands.  I used a pair of mechanic wear, which didn't affect dexterity too much while fishing.  Also, I used a small wooden block to hold the jaw open when removing the fly.

Man that is a beautiful fish.  Can I ask where you were?

Nice fish! That's a really pretty one.  I love gar -- I have a ratty old t-shirt with all of the gar species (lepisosteidae) on it....I'll try to bust it out for the next beer tie.  Beth has tried to throw it away about 6 times but I keep digging it out of the trash, along with my red capitals hat that fell in the Anacostia River.

I've only caught one gar in my life and it was a longnose.  Got him on a live mummichog under a bobber several years ago - I didn't use gloves because I wasn't prepared to catch gar that day....but I would have used them if I had them ;).

I also had a spotted in a large aquarium years ago -- very cool, and VERY fast-growing fish.  Well, as adults they kind of just do the "crazy stare" and remain still -- until you threw some duskystripe shiners or redbelly dace in there.

I was on an ocean kayak nalu, which is a SUP/kayak hybrid, pretty stable to fish off of (I haven't fallen off of it too badly yet), and relatively cheap.

I looked on youtube for ideas on what to tie. I modified the one in the link below to use what I had on hand.

I think this was a longnose -- but please chime in if I'm incorrect.  It might be tough to tell.
