Over the next few weeks, I'm going to try some early season angling in Allegheny or Garrett county, both the C&R and put and take waters.  What should I be stocking up on?

I'm working on sz 8, 10 and 12 black wooly buggers and bunny leaches.  I'm stocked with sz 16/18  San Juan worms, but how about wets, nymphs and dries?

Can't go wrong with tungsten zebra midges, size #18-22. They sink quickly and can fool the pickier fish.

Must have: orange stimulator, #14-16. Parachute Adams #14-18 to imitate the "early grays" like the Quill Gordon and Blue Quills. Other than that, the usual suspects.

Art,

That looks like a great fly.  Does color matter?  I've seen two variants (in my brief search)  Olive/brown which sort of looks like 70s carpet or vomit.  The other a black/brown that looks a less tacky, but just a bit.  I'm wondering if this is a stone imitation or crawfish imitation on the Casselman.   I'm heading down now to tie a few.
You got me thinking about other stone flies (montana nymph, bitch creek, and some nice woven patterns I've tied before).

Does anyone fish dace out on the Yough or Casselman?  I will probably also try some Tenkara on Bear Creek which is a bit smaller.

I think you have a great list going here Carl -- everyone is spot on.

I was just going to add that if you find yourself facing a long glide with visible fish dimpling the surface and eating what you suspect are midges, you should consider bringing a midge pupa to hang in the surface film.  There is nothing easier than an Al's rat for this purpose.  A size #20-22 in black or olive works.  The few times Beth and I have needed to "midge", we've basically had luck only on this pattern fished in the film -- and we've take a couple of nice browns with it.  I think the pupa is really the important life stage when you *see feeding. I don't even carry adults.

A tiny (#18-20) bead PT nymph (or wd-40, or zebra midge) works great.  I'm not sure one is better than another.  We basically don't even use dropper nymphs larger than a #18 anymore.  Well, technically I use a #16 wet hook, which is like a 18-20 in profile but with a bigger hook gap.

For dries, you only need 2.   I'd carry a #14 CDC and Elk (heavy on the hair if you are fishing rough water -- light and sparse as possible for flat water....in other words, have both), and a #14 CDC "Puff".  This began as a CDC comparadun, but with PT fibers instead of microfibbets.  Then, I started using more CDC for better floatation.  Frog's fanny with the brush really helps.  Now, it's just a wad of CDC wing on a light 103bl hook.  Anyway, it's the best selective fish dry fly I've ever used and we've taken a lot of fish with it.  Beth took a nice cutthroat with it in CO, and if you're working a fish that keeps exploding on a piece of water but won't take, you can usually get 'em if you clip off that crappy #16 parachute adams and come back with the more lifelike CDC dry ;).

We don't fish parachutes, but I did pull another one out of a tree 2 weeks ago that someone else was clearly banking-on.

I don't know anything about a rubber legs and rarely fish streamers for trout, unless it's for stockers.  Then I just use a bead woolly bugger of some kind.  Any kind.

Have fun!  Been in CA (Los Angeles), and onto MO soon.

Comeback soon gene,  I need some squirrel tails.  As for fishing for stockers,  I think that's what I will be doing most of the time.  Most of those creeks are put and take and have little summer holdover (from what I'm told).  The Savage, Yough???? (damn I wish I could spell Yokaganey) and Cassleman are an exception, but even there, there are a lot of stockers.

and now I'll have to tie up some surface film midges.  I had Griffiths gnats on the list, but time for some brassies and other tiny thread bodied beasts.

dont forget the North Branch of the Potomac.  I believe a WV or MD license is valid there.  I've had some great fun wading that stream.

Danny,
How easy is the access to the North Branch from I-68?
I will look into it if I get a chance.

Oh ya I agree with Misha be on The lookout for blue quills on the Savage. Little warm spell might make some pop.

LOL, Carl! When I was working in the plastics recycling biz, instead of using the off putting  "vomit" or "puke green" to describe the color of recycled mixed plastics, we called that odious color "seafoam green."  Way fuglier than "avocado" which was a very hot late 60s  and well-into the 70s appliance color.   ;-)

+1, as heavy as you can tie it.

Thanks it worked like a charm.
