Hi Jeff -- We do it all the time when the situation is suits.  I just spend several hours doing it with success using small streamers on Saturday, and I plan to do it all this coming weekend for chain pickerel (and probably fallfish).  Getting the fly in front of the fish is the way to go to get them....fish are stupid and thus deserve to be stung with pieces of sharp metal in my opinion.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I actually caught a redfish on a tidal marsh in NC by working a "swing" of some tidal current running out of a patch of vegetation -- same idea, just a weird place to use it.

I rarely swing flies for bass, mainly because I don't think it is the most effective approach.  Assuming you are using streamers, adding some action always seems to be more effective.  I have never really fished for bass early in the year, but I wonder if just a swing would work better then.

I am assuming that when you say swing you are talking about fishing the typical down and across like you would for steelhead.

2nd to Yambag.  In my fairly limited Pawtomic bass fishing, I have found the most effective pattern - woolly bugger, never gets hit on the swing, its almost always on the retrieve.  it seems the smallies want to chase the bait rather than have it come to them like trout.  just my $.02.

going camping in 2 weeks with a buddy and our sons will validate my theory and report back if helpful.

Something else you might try is one of the Teeny lines for swinging stuff.  I've been experimenting with a BS-100 lately and like it for wade fishing.  I was looking for a line I could fish while wading (w/o a stripping basket), which would "count down" in calm areas, and which would also sink a bit for swinging flies in current.  The running line floats, making it far better for wading than the int. running lines on other shooting systems.  It also seems to be pretty sensitive to strikes fishing the little streamers I like.  I have a "streamer tip" line that *works, but isn't much better than a floater in my opinion....this 20' sinking head is a lot better.
