This article contains release notes for Current Channel (Preview) builds of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Project, and Teams for Windows desktop. Every week, we'll highlight interesting new features, important fixes, and any significant issues we want you to know about.
Improved experience in changing the source of a linked chart:In a situation where a presentation contains a linked chart, which is not only stored at a SharePoint location, but also synced to a local folder, when the user tries to change the chart source via "File -> Info -> Edit Links to File -> Change Source...", the initial location in the Change Source dialog now shows the current location of the linked chart, instead of the last used location. PowerPoint can now convert the local sync folder location to its corresponding SharePoint URL and preserve it in the file if the user chooses a chart in a local sync folder as the new chart source.
Resolved an issue where attempting to reference a file using Draft with Copilot would give the error "Copilot wasn't able to apply the right sensitivity label to this file because it couldn't work with the content you referenced."
We fixed an issue with user and shared mailboxes where a message sent from a user with saved to Sent Items folder enabled and where DelegateSentItemsStyle is set to 1 is saved in the shared mailbox Sent Items folder.
We fixed an issue in projects saved to SharePoint document libraries where, on Save, a user's changes remained in their local cache after the file check in was complete. If the file was then immediately checked out, updated, and checked back in by a different user, the first user experienced possible data loss.
We fixed an issue where a file failed to upload with the following error when co-authoring: "We ran into a problem with this file and can't save any new changes. Save a copy to avoid losing your work."
We fixed an issue where OneNote would close unexpectedly when rapidly navigating from one .PDF file to another .PDF file between different sections, or when performing an undo operation on a .PDF printout insertion.
We removed the "Yes To All" button from a dialog box in Word, since it wasn't working as intended. When opening a document that was shared as read-only, selecting "Yes To All" would open the document in editing mode instead of read-only.
We fixed an issue where the error message "You are attempting to open a file type that has been blocked by your File Block settings in the Trust Center." would appear when trying to open a file type marked for opening in Protected View, when Application Guard was enabled for Office and the setting "Open selected file types in Protected View and allow editing" was enabled.
PowerPoint Designer is now available for presentations encrypted with sensitivity labels and when the files are located in SharePoint or OneDrive. This new capability requires that your organization has enabled co-authoring for files encrypted with sensitivity labels.Learn More
Performance improvement related to fonts: If you do not use printer fonts or have not heard of printer fonts, unchecking the setting in File/Options/Advanced/[Include fonts that are stored on the printer] can help speed up font related operations such as choosing a font from font drop down, or formatting a cell by bolding/italicizing a cell's font, etc.
Updated encryption for Microsoft Purview Information Protection: Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit key length in Cipher Block Chaining mode (AES256-CBC) is now the default Microsoft Purview Information Protection encryption mechanism for Microsoft 365 Apps documents and emails. Present a local file in PowerPoint Live: The "Present in Teams" button now supports presenting local files in PowerPoint Live in Microsoft Teams. Once you click the button, you are prompted to save the file to Microsoft cloud, and then automatically launch the presentation in PowerPoint Live.
We fixed an issue where default sensitivity labels weren't displayed until after a save event. The sensitivity bar in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Windows now indicates that a default label is applied on the next save for new and previously unlabeled files.
We fixed an issue where the PowerPoint Eyedropper Tool displayed the incorrect color when the Windows Accessibility Setting was set to Invert, either through Windows Color Filters, or the Windows Magnifier Tool.
We fixed an issue where a dialog asking "This document contains links that may refer to other files. Do you want to update the document with the data from the linked files?" wouldn't appear for files with shortcuts.
We fixed an issue where elements of a query design grid may appear on top of the subform datasheet when a subform control had its Source Object property set to a query, and the parent form was viewed in Form View.
Assign a sublabel as the default when a parent label is selected: When using built-in sensitivity labels in Microsoft 365 Apps, admins can specify a sublabel to get applied automatically when a parent label is selected. This takes effect only when users select a parent label manually.
Fixed an issue where the ACWP earned value didn't always roll-up as expected from sub tasks to summary tasks. A side effect of the problem is that other earned value calculations such as TCPI, which rely on ACWP, were incorrect.
We fixed an issue where the error message "The last time you opened filename, it caused serious error. Do you still want to open it?" may appear when creating Word documents through automation using templates.
Reducing unwanted fragmenting of conditional formatting rules: Check out the speed-up in workbooks with lots of unwanted fragmented conditional formatting rules. When a workbook is opened this feature merges those fragmented conditional formatting rules that are identical, within a contiguous range of cells, and with unchanged priority ordering. It excludes rules whose evaluation relies on a selection range like Above or Below average, Unique or Duplicate, Gradients, etc. and rules in PivotTables.
We fixed an issue where the document was perceived as 'dirty' when handling encrypted documents and document properties. This led to the user getting a 'save changes?' when closing the document even if they had not made any modifications.
We fixed an issue where the task pane add-in API for Microsoft Project does not always set or get values for the following properties: ConstraintType, EarnedValueMethod, FixedCostAccrual, OutlineLevel, PercentComplete, PercentWorkComplete, Priority, Status, Type, Active, Milestone, Summary
We fixed an issue in PowerPoint record window in case of audio or video hardware issue. In case either the audio or video hardware fails to provide picture or voice then we were waiting indefinitely with an assumption that this should never happen when the initial communication with those devices are successful. The changes will no longer make that assumption and fail sooner, so that the user can toggle (off/on) the devices and try to record again.
We fixed an issue that caused a Mandatory Label warning bar to show even though the policy has Default label on it. The issue is for Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents in OneDrive. The fix checks if default label application was ever attempted.
Insert in-cell images with the new IMAGE function: Your images can now be part of the worksheet, instead of floating on top. You can move and resize cells, sort and filter, and work with images within an Excel table.
We defined a register key that when set fixes an issue that prevented messages from being sent when Outlook is running with multiple Exchange accounts and at least one of them is in Online mode (as opposed to cached mode.)
"You are about to activate an OLE object that may contain viruses or may otherwise be harmful to your computer. You may want to verify that this object comes from a trustworthy source before you continue."
This message appears if the Office security policy is set to disable all ActiveX. Prior to this change, depending on the number of pictures included in the header and footer regions, printing could display the message 36 times. Now, printing does not display the message. When drilling into a task, resource or assignment, the message used to display up to six times for each object. Now, the message appears twice.
We fixed an issue in drawing chart types with markers on a data series, where the markers would draw in the wrong place, or else would be missing entirely when the document was exported as PDF or XPS.
Date Support for Pivot Tables Connected to Power BI: In PivotTables that are connected to Power BI datasets, dates are now supported for analysis as the data type is no longer a string. For example, filtering data on specific timeframes is now possible.

Excel PivotTable version compatibility user messaging: Excel now gives alerts about PivotTable compatibility issues and provides informative documentation and workarounds. When your version of Excel is unable to read data in a workbook, we present users with documentation that provides options to proactively troubleshoot and resolve the issue. In addition, we also allow users to upload their Excel document to OneDrive so they can seamlessly open the file in Excel for the web.
Disable the Azure Information Protection Add-in by default: Office apps now automatically disables the legacy Azure Information Protection add-in and use the built-in sensitivity labels to view and apply labels powered by Microsoft Purview Information Protection.
