Hello everyone,

TICTeC, mySociety's Impacts of Civic Technology Conference, will be returning next year on 10 & 11 June, in the Belgian city of Mechelen, and online.

In light of the exceptional political times we’re living through, and that 2025 marks 10 years since TICTeC began, TICTeC 2025 will have a renewed focus on what we’re calling “Pro-Democracy Technology”.

TICTeC 2025 will bring together people working on defensive technology against threats to democracy, and those who are using technologies constructively to enrich and strengthen the heartbeat of civic and democratic life.

You can read more about TICTeC 2025 over on our blog, and on the TICTeC website

Early Bird tickets are already on sale, saving £100 per ticket. Sign up now to save

We really look forward to coming together again to explore how technology can be leveraged for a resilient and proactive global democratic future.

All the best,
Gemma.

Hello from Tbilisi! I hope this message finds you well. I realize this is a bit out of the ordinary, but I’m reaching out to share my story as I work to overcome financial barriers on my journey toward education. If you’re moved to be part of this journey as an “education angel investor,” your support would mean the world to me. https://gofund.me/5199b32e

Taking this step and reaching out isn’t easy, but I believe in the kindness of others who help make dreams achievable. Thank you for considering this request, and please know that your support, whether in sharing or contributing, makes a genuine difference.

With gratitude,
Mariam

This is my story

Hi Gemma,

Could we attempt a different, more inclusive, approach to TICTEC this year?

I see you're using Pro-Democracy Technology as a theme, which is an excellent approach in the GOV.UK sector. I'm hoping we might open up the re-framing to include the communities who run, and interconnect, NRENs in a few countries. That's Jisc in the UK.

The UK, and most English speaking countries, have a pretty restricted view of what their NRENs should be doing. e.g. If you went to a UK university you probably wouldn't be aware of who provided the network and "services" you were using. Its different in more democratic countries.

The Dutch, as one, have a far more OPEN perspective of what an NREN means and should do. Their National public sectors - particularly Government and Education - and their networks, haven't the same walls between them. e.g. You won't find the a section about "public values" in Jisc's web site.

Excuse my bluntness. I do mean to be constructively critical. But mySociety don't appear to be interested in engaging with (online) communities who have an interest in improving democratic technologies, both before and after events. You'll never find a pro democratic tool unless you roam the communities and choose the one they've starting their journey with.

So would you be kind enough to pass on my comments to Louise Crowe and Alex Parsons. Alex's blog post was a good opener, However, the aim of media, particularly democratic media, these days is to measure the response to an article not to just pump out the copy. Mind you, that's what people in mySociety think. It may be different in yours.

Your Sincerely,
Simon Fenton-Jones
