I was interested to participate in London International Model United Nations (LIMUN) 2014 because it was the largest annual university-based MUN in Europe, in which more than 1,500 delegates from across the globe participated. It was a great opportunity to widen my horizon through working together with youth from all over the world to seek solutions to pressing global issues as well as through networking. Furthermore, LIMUN also offered a wide range of committees and themes. A number of committees catered to my huge interest in Development issues and I thought they would certainly enhance my knowledge on the matter.

Wilmar neglects large downstream activities in its TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures) reporting, but it has promised this will change. In 2018, the Wilmar Group conducted a qualitative scenario analysis to identify the possible impacts that climate change may have on its business. The analysis focused mainly on its upstream operations and supply chain. In a 2 degrees Celsius (2DS) scenario, the analysis revealed a potential reduction of FFB supply due to prolonged droughts and floods. In a 2DS scenario, Wilmar sees opportunities in selling more biofuels. The company promises that in the future it will do a TCFD analysis on its complete downstream activities.

In many recent CRR studies, Wilmar has been linked to deforestation and social conflicts. This was based on CRR primary research, but also cited in various reports from other civil society organisations. The list below starts with the most recent CRR publications:

Indonesia shoulders a significant tobacco burden, with almost two million cases of tobacco-related illnesses and more than two hundred thousand tobacco-related deaths annually. Indonesian tobacco control is progressing but lags behind other countries. Our study evaluates factors that contribute to the slow progress of tobacco policy change in Indonesia from the perspective of tobacco control experts (TCEs).

The tobacco industry is a major industry in Indonesia, with annual cigarette production reaching 342 billion sticks in 2016 [2]. Tobacco company networks are well established and are bound by perceived economic benefits and some are supported by funding from the tobacco industry [24]. These networks include tobacco manufacturers, tobacco leaf growers/farmers, clove farmers, and interested community groups [2]. It is also supported by other players who benefit from tobacco advertising and marketing such as media and advertising companies and sponsorship recipients. The tobacco company networks have stronger links to the policymakers as evidenced by the tobacco interference index score, Indonesia is ranked the highest among South East Asian countries [13].

Our tobacco control advocates here in Indonesia report that they are regularly learn about meeting in the national level between tobacco executive and policy makers. So, the tobacco companies are very well entrenched. (Respondent 5, International expert)

To date, there is no code of conduct to prevent collaboration between the tobacco industry and government bodies, except the policy adopted internally by The Ministry of Health, nor is there a requirement to report any tobacco industry contribution to political leaders/parties [13]. Under the PP, tobacco company sponsorship is permitted, provided no brand logos are published, however, this has also been circumvented [33]. Advocacy for the adoption of a code of conduct by all government agencies is necessary to minimise this complicit relation. Engaging with the Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) is an opportunity for tobacco control stakeholders to open communication around reducing tobacco industry interference in policymaking [49].
