Rightfrom the start everything is effing fancy. From the opening scene itself you know it's a Karan Johar film because in no other movie will the hero sleep in a coordinated pin-striped night suit that is perfectly ironed, even when it is really late apparently.
Alia AKA Shanaya has a full song and dance sequence before her entry. The song is Gulabi Ankhen and there she is, 17 or 18 years of age, being shown as a girl who only cares about clothes, shoes, bags and money.
The whole school wears these hot AF blazers for their assembly speech. Is this an everyday event? I am confused here. Also, which private school allows their students to have their hair styled for school, wear fancy accessories and regular clothes? We need to get enrolled.
Amidst other things, there are also 100 choreographed songs that happen in periodic intervals. Ones in which Shanaya and gang are dressed up in tube babydoll dresses, carrying Birkin bags standing in front of a cafeteria which is bigger than my entire school. They also happen randomly and have 100+ back-up dancers.
It is the time when Shanaya is flaunting her expensive wardrobe. The whole gang has come back from their Thailand wedding which they were all coincidentally invited to. ( we never even got permission to go for our school trip to Varanasi LOL). The ostentatious display of designer lehengas is just too much. There is also a lot of drama that happens in between, and Rohan and Abhi become friends.
Shanaya and Rohan have been having problems right from the beginning. Then Shanaya starts falling for Abhi. Rohan and Abhi are of course the biggest contenders because no other students really matter in these situations. Again, everyone is wearing blazers all the time but the real question is how?
After Abhi and Shanaya make out and get caught, she decides to become sanskaari by wearing a salwar kameez. This is the same Bollywood logic you can see in the second half of Main Hoon Na, where Amrita Rao starts wearing ethnic clothes because it symbolizes leaving behind her past ways.
He was born to billionaire Ashok Nanda and Gayatri Nanda. He never got attention from his father because of the fact his father did not approve of his dreams of becoming a rockstar. He is on of the 'Tata' students.
Rohan makes his entry in the song 'Papa Kehte Hai Bada Naam Karega'. In this song also introduced is Tanya Israni. Afterwards at a party presumed to be held by Shanaya's family he is seen flirting with Tanya Israni and after this his girlfriend Shanaya Singhania pours red wine over Tanya and threatens to break up with him if he doesn't change.
During football practice the coach can't decide whether to make Rohan or Abhi captain so he makes Jeet captain to make no fights. They win against St Lawrence who have been beating them for the last 24 years and Abhi and Rohan become best friends.
Rohan takes Abhi home and he meets his dad. His dad starts to take a liking to Abhi and starts to favour him instead of Rohan. Abhi stays the night at Rohan's house after drinking so much and his dad invites him to Rohan's brother's wedding.
In Thailand for the wedding, Rohan continuously flirts with Tanya. Shanaya, frustrated by his actions, makes a plan with Abhi to put Rohan in his place by flirting with Abhi and they succeed. Rohan and Shanaya get back together and are very happy with each other.
When they return to school the Student of the Year competition has started and the IQ test happens and he comes on the top 16 list. The next part of the Student of the Year is the treasure hunt in which his team consists of Sudo, Esha, and Shruti. His team lose to Abhi's team by 1 second and they go to Abhi's house to celebrate his victory.
After dinner, Abhi's grandmother has a cardiac arrest and Abhi's aunt blames Abhi for making everyone die calling him a bad luck charm. Rohan soon comforts Abhi saying that it is wrong. They hug in a sweet moment of compassion.
Afterwards Abhi and Shanaya fall in love and kiss and Rohan witnesses this and gets angry and even pushes Shanaya. He also calls Abhi what his aunt calls him a bad luck charm after his grandmother dies and they fight but Shanaya then stops them and tells them they don't care about her and her feelings so she breaks up with him and she leaves Abhi. The enemies turned best friends turn enemies once again...*sigh*
During the triathlon it is clear that he is going to win but Abhi is slowly beating him but after seeing Rohan's dad happy seeing Rohan lose Abhi loses on purpose. During the victory speech he gives up the trophy saying for unknown reasons. Sudo has massive argument with the Dean and says that the dean is responsible for ruining everyone's lives. Later in the film Shanaya and Abhi are married and Rohan and Abhi have not yet made up. In the gardens of the hospital where the Dean was. Rohan and Abhi have a fight and Rohan shouts why Abhi did lose on purpose and he tells him and they make up soon after. It is soon later seen that Rohan and Abhi have a race to even the scores and the film ends.
Shanaya Singhania is Rohan's ex-girlfriend who was in a relationship with him for at least 4 years long. Their relationship is shown to be on rocky footing at they very start of the film. Their relationship ended after Shanaya kissed Rohan's best friend Abhimanyu Singh .
Abhimanyu Singh is the best friend of Rohan Nanda. But they were enemies when they first met. Rohan thought that Abhimanyu was egotistical and thought that he was better than Rohan. And Rohan hated him for it. Rohan hatched a plan to make Abhimanyu fall off his high horse. He wanted Abhimanyu to send his urine sample to coach shah under the idea that it was for a physical examination. After getting Abhimanyu in trouble, Abhimanyu could have dragged Rohan down with him, but he didn't. That touched Rohan's heart.
They have been best friends since the football match. They did everything together. One night after taking a drunk Rohan home, Abhimanyu decides to stay the night. In the morning when he is eating breakfast with Rohan's family, he is invited to the eldest Nanda sons' wedding in Thailand.
In thailand, Rohan still hasn't let go of his flirting tendencies. After Shanaya catches him with Tanya, she is heartbroken. After taking some advice from Abhi, Shanaya pretends to make Rohan jealous to make get him on the right path. But Abhi starts to fall in love with Shanaya. Rohan caught Abhi and Shanaya kissing and ended his friendship with him.
Tanya Israni is the romantic interest of Rohan during his college days and possibly afterwards as well. During Rohan's relationship with Shanaya he still flirted with her and other girls but in a scene where they go back home . In Thailand Tanya is always seen with Rohan and this is the reason why Abhi and Shanaya try to get him jealous. She goes to prom with Rohan and gets out of the competition when she trips on her high heels. When they visit the Dean she is the first to see him and embraces him as soon as he comes.
In his utopian world, students have perfectly chiselled and groomed bodies, boys drive around campus in a swanky set of wheels, girls sport designer wear (Alia Bhatt as Shanaya Singhania makes her entry with a song that rattles off all the brand names she loves) and students prove their worth with inconsequential competitions that in no way, have real-world significance.
When pressure to fit in is already paramount, the SOTY franchise pushes a narrative that equates material wealth with popularity and fame. Talk to young urbanites, and they will tell you why they want to own a pair of Louis Vuitton or Manolo Blahniks, talk to them about their college preferences and a mention of top-tier colleges (read glamorous) will sneak in the conversation.
In a utopian situation, I would rather see a safer world for my young sisters, brothers, cousins, nieces, and nephews, as opposed to the idealistic and glamorous life that Dharma Productions wants us to aspire for.
