We have recently implemented OpenSciEd Middle School Units in all of our middle school classrooms. This past summer, as the Science Instructional Coach in Colonial, I worked alongside the Activate Professional Learning Group to implement professional learning for the units in our district and state. In addition, I worked with many of the facilitators from Activate to provide professional learning opportunities in our district for our teachers.

We are so thankful for the work and efforts of the Activate Professional Learning Facilitators. I love how this group of Activate facilitators along with Tracy, the lead of the Activate PL Group, created personalized learning opportunities for the instructional coaches and teachers in this state, and specifically for our district! The Activate group is friendly, personable, understands the workload and stresses of teachers, and adapts the professional learning to our needs. Thank you Activate for helping us along with our successful implementation of OpenSciEd Curriculum!

I can't say enough about how wonderful the teacher's professional learning was over the last three days! We chose the right teachers to help with the facilitation, and Activate Learning chose the right facilitators to help mentor the teachers and co-present. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It was like all the stars lined up. I loved hearing how much the teachers loved being in the training. Most of them were not getting paid to attend the training, and they were saying the teachers that didn't come to the training are not going to be able to teach this in the fall. This group of teachers are going to be the teachers that rally for professional learning and this program.

Activate Learning was able to recommend a customized OpenSciEd/ IQWST implementation. Both curricula share the same pedagogy and even some of the same authors, providing a seamless experience to teachers and students through Activate Learning's Interactive Digital Platform.

Activate Learning is a great support system for me, for the district, for the teachers, and for the kids. It's a one-stop-shop for everything the we need to support our science program and science instruction in our district.

Yes, absolutely. The Activate Learning Digital Platform fully integrates with leading Learning Management Systems (LMS) including Google Classroom, Schoology, and Canvas. Grade passback is included, so grades pass from our digital platform to your LMS, saving teachers valuable time!

For those students who do not have the requisite knowledge to take full part in a lesson, teachers might need to provide additional instruction. Listen as Sharon Vaughn discusses some ways to address this issue (time:1:04).

The first question is, are your teachers using Managed AppleIDs? Assuming you are using Apple School Manager, then are you importing users from your SIS to create AppleIDs. (This is likely.) If the AppleIDs are MAIDs, then they will not be able to purchase applications from the App Store. That feature is disabled for MAIDs (About Managed Apple IDs for education - Apple SupportAbout Managed Apple IDs for education - Apple Support)

If you are NOT using MAIDs and just having your teachers create AppleIDs, using their school email, then the School has no management of those AppleIDs and any applications purchaed by the teacher would be theirs and not the schools. Plus, some applications have different licensing requirements for VPP than personal purchase. You can't just give one app to another user.

Since teachers are (presumably) all adults, they could sign into the App Store using their personal Apple ID for discovery purposes. If they find an app they like, they would need to make the request of IT to procure licenses and distribute the app to their student's devices however.

When classes are synced, SDS creates a Microsoft 365 group for each class synced. SDS also adds the students as group members, and the teachers as group owners. As student rosters change in the SIS, SDS also updates the rosters in the Groups, to reflect the SIS. This portion of the process will stay the same.

There are many strategies instructors can use to activate a learner's prior knowledge. The list below provides a few examples of strategies that work well in the higher education classroom. Click on the strategy to learn more. Need help implementing a strategy or want ideas specific to your course? Feel free to email us at teac...@vt.edu.

Charts and other graphic organizers can help as well. For example, a Venn diagram or comparison/contrast chart can be useful in getting students to activate prior knowledge and highlight similiarities and differences. Learn more about advance organizers.

Case studies can be used at any level of depth and can range from brief to more extended cases. In this case (pun intended), we're referring more to the use of brief cases used to activate prior knowledge. These are intended to get students in the mindset for the day's lesson (or beginning of a unit) and bring into working memory the knowledge they already have, while hinting at the pieces of information they still need to learn.

An opening question, or question of the day, is a question displayed on the projector or board at the beginning of class. Students have the first 1-3 minutes of class to answer the question before it goes away. It can be a problem, a concept question, an opinion question, or a personal experience question. The key idea is that the question activates prior knowledge that students will need for the day's lesson.

Power previewing is an effective reading strategy that can activate prior knowledge. Before actively reading a text, students skim the text strategically. This may require some scaffolding on the instructor's part. For example, ask students to preview section headings, boldface words, and definitions. Then, ask students what stands out from their preview. Is there anything that reminds them of something they have previously learned? How so? Pairing an advance organizer (like a K-W-L) can work well with this strategy.

Teachers have owner permissions for classes they have created or been added to as a co-teacher. Only IT Administrators can edit Messaging permissions for Microsoft Teams and grant teachers the ability to delete messages in team channels. To make these changes as an IT administrator, you first need to log into the Microsoft Teams admin center.

Activate and Pods allow teachers to listen to small group collaboration, revealing critical insights in instruction. With real-time feedback into the learning process, teachers gain the insight needed to activate learning for every student. Teachers are able to monitor each group, reinforce and redirect when needed.

Treatment group teachers delivered thematically related literacy lessons about how scientists study past events. These students also read books on related topics during the summer between 1st and 2nd grades.

Looking for inspiration to motivate your own students over the long break? Here are some responses from our teachers, in their own words, with some great tips for continued fun learning over the summer.
