The National Library of Australia, in conjunction with the State Library of New South Wales, is working towards making a digitised version of the New South Wales Government Gazette from 1832-2001 available through the Trove Newspapers service (http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ ).

If it is done like the Australian Newspapers this will be the most fantastic resource (especially if the government issues its gazettes in a similar format) for all forms of historical research be it family history, land or legal research. The Govt Gazettes are far too bulky to browse and it is very hard to find anything in them unless you have the exact details.  One digitised they will be an invaluable research for research into NSW history.

The National Library is conducting a short online user survey on use of government gazette materials to help them better understand why and how people use government gazettes for information, so that they can align with those needs. The survey is at

If you are as enthusiastic as I am about this project please do the survey and leave them a message of encouragement.

Cheers

Victorian Government Gazettes were digitised by the State Library Victoria, <http://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/> but are still rather clumsy to search - they seem to depend on the indexes having been run through OCR rather than a full text search being possible.

Couldn’t agree more Gary. I’ve been very disappointed with my searching of VGGs. Far better to do full-text OCRing like the newspapers. And I found the search engine clunky, and not a patch on Trove (but that may just be me).

Why only do half the job? I’d much prefer to see half the GGs fully OCRed than all of them with only the indexes OCRed.

G'day all,

Don't forget that
- New South Wales Government Gazette (between 1836-1851)
is included in the SLV digitisation project.
- Often you can find stuff in the Vic Gazettes
by searching through Google with the domain 'gazette.slv.vic.gov.au'
- NSW Gov Gazettes are digitised on CDs in Libraries
and online through ancestry.com.au (again not indexed well)
- NSW Gov Publications are progressively being digitised,
and made available through <https://www.opengov.nsw.gov.au/>

regards

Ken McInnes
