When your computer is unable to boot to the operating system even after repeated attempts, SupportAssist OS Recovery automatically starts. This recovery environment enables you to diagnose hardware issues, repair your computer, back up your files, or restore your computer to factory defaults.
If your computer does not support SupportAssist OS Recovery, you can download the operating system recovery image. Learn How to Download and Use the Dell Operating System Recovery Image in Microsoft Windows.
Important: If the recovery image on the hard drive is corrupted or deleted, the computer cannot boot to the recovery environment. Newer Dell computers support BIOSConnect, a feature that allows you to restore the recovery image on the hard drive. Learn more about Using BIOSConnect to recover SupportAssist OS Recovery Partition.
Reset to Factory Settings: This option restores the original factory-installed operating system and software that was shipped with the computer. The local recovery image is available only on consumer platforms such as Alienware, Inspiron, Vostro, and XPS products.
To restore your Dell computer using the SupportAssist OS Recovery Cloud option, you must create a USB recovery media using the Dell OS Recovery tool. Follow the steps below to create the USB recovery media.

If anyone with a home consumer PC still requires assistance performing a reset to factory condition, please read the 24-Jan-2022 post in christos1's Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery that explains the difference between:
Note: Users with Precision and other Dell computer models normally used in a business environment should refer to the Documents section on the support page for their computer model. For example, the Documentation tab for the Precision 5560 has a link to the Precision 5560 Service Manual and Precision 5560 Re-imaging Guide for Windows 10.
Before starting a reset to factory condition with SupportAssist OS Recovery make sure that all your data and personal files are backed up to an external backup drive, since many users have reported that they were unable to recover their data if they used SupportAssist OS Recovery to backup their files in Step # 4 of those instructions.
Also note that if the recovery image on the hard drive is corrupt or deleted, the computer cannot boot into the recovery environment. Newer Dell computers that support BIOSConnect should be able to download a recovery image for their computer from the cloud (i.e., by connecting to a Dell.com server over the Internet and downloading their SupportAssist OS Recovery image). See Using BIOSConnect to Recover SupportAssist OS Recovery Partition for more information.
On a more personal note, I had an issue a few years ago where my Inspiron 5584 would get stuck on the Dell logo at every restart and would not boot up correctly. I was unable to enter the SupportAssist OS Recovery / Dell SuportAssist Remediation recovery environment by the usual method (i.e., tapping the F12 key when the Dell logo appears to access the One Time Boot menu). I was told that SupportAssist OS Recovery should also launch automatically if your system fails to boot correctly after 3 or 4 consecutive attempts, but I performed several hard shutdowns (i.e., by holding the power button for 10-15 sec to shut down, and then powering on again) but I still could not get into the recovery environment . At the time my 1-year service warranty was still valid, but it took over an hour on the phone with Dell Tech Support before I was finally able to enter my recovery environment and start a reset to factory condition. However, I have no idea what I did that finally allowed me to access the recovery environment - it just popped up after I powered on after yet another hard shutdown. Luckily, I perform regular backups of my data and personal files to an external hard drive using a backup utility called Karen's Replicator so I was able to recovery my data after the factory reset ran to completion.
Here's the solution everyone. If you can afford it, just buy a Mac. I've worked in IT and have for well over a decade. I switched to Mac for my personal computing many moons ago and now I cannot stand how ridiculously stupid Windows computers are. It's like they are built to break.
I'm about to take a sledge hammer to this stupid Dell Latitude 5420. I took it out of the box, signed it, installed updates and rebooted then the computer takes a dump. So far I can't re-install the OS AT ALL. Not with the OS recovery drive or the built in recovery drive, just get this stupid error. I can't wait till i never have to support another windows system in my life. Good riddance.
Thank you JanOlsen!! This fixed it for me. You're a life saver. How is the average person supposed to know this stuff? This should be a well documented error based on how easy it is to come across it.
Dell Technologies recommends that supported computers use Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Automated by SupportAssist for a premium restoration experience. If your computer does not support Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery, Dell provides operating system recovery images online. This is for the Windows, Ubuntu, or Linux image that was factory installed on your computer. The Dell OS Recovery Tool provides an interface to quickly download and create a bootable USB drive to reinstall the operating system.
The Dell OS Recovery Tool helps you download the operating system recovery image that is customized for your Dell computer and create a USB recovery media. The Dell OS Recovery Tool allows you to download either Microsoft Windows, Ubuntu, or Linux operating system recovery image that was preinstalled on your Dell computer.
Yes, the Advanced Mode in the Dell operating system Recovery Tool allows you to create a USB recovery media. It uses an operating system image file in ISO file format. This is useful if you downloaded the operating system recovery image using a Linux, Mac, or Android device.
Windows 10 or Windows 11 or Windows 11 recovery image enables you to format the hard drive and install a clean copy of Windows 10. The file size of this recovery image is considerably higher than the Windows 10 or Windows 11 Automated by SupportAssist.
The Windows 10 and Windows 11 Automated by SupportAssist recovery image can create USB recovery media for Dell computers that support SupportAssist OS Recovery. (Figure 12 [English only].)

Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery provides a recovery environment with tools to diagnose and troubleshoot issues that may occur before your computer boots to the operating system. When your computer is unable to boot to the operating system after repeated attempts, it automatically starts SupportAssist OS Recovery. This recovery environment enables you to diagnose hardware issues, repair your computer, back up your files, or restore your computer to its factory state.
SupportAssist OS Recovery is supported on select Dell computers that run a Dell factory-installed Microsoft Windows 10 operating system. For the list of computers where SupportAssist OS Recovery is available, see the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Support Matrix under Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Support Documentation.
Typical recovery image files for the operating system in an ISO file format are between 5-16 GB in size. (The file size varies between different operating systems.) Once the file is downloaded, the Dell operating system Recovery Tool verifies the integrity of the file before creating the USB recovery media. The time to download and verify that the integrity of the file can vary depending on network speed and file size.
You may receive a "Not enough space on drive" error. Where you download a large file through a Dell online application such as Dell OS Recovery tool. This is due to a space limitation on the hard drive where the files are being saved to. Some operating system recovery images can be up to 16 GB in file size.
To correct this error, free up additional disk space on the hard drive. For information about freeing up disk space in Microsoft Windows, see the Dell knowledge base article: How to Free up Disk Space in Microsoft Windows.
The operating system recovery image may not contain the latest device drivers for your Dell computer. The latest device drivers are available at Dell.com/support/drivers. After the operating system is installed, Dell Technologies recommends that you download and install the latest device drivers.
The Dell operating system Recovery Tool fails to launch after installation, or running the installer does not start the installation process. You can temporarily disable the anti-virus or anti-malware software that may be installed on the computer and then run the application or the installer again.
Now the situation arises that I want to completely clean install the device since the Windows installation that is on there is an enterprise edition and I do not want the device tied to the company anymore. My go-to idea is/was the Dell OS recovery tool, to fetch the installation that was OEM for the device.
I am hoping it's possible to get windows 10 on there (the license sticker says Win7). What I am experiencing now is that the Dell recovery tool gives me an error that it cannot connect to the backend.
When I purchased my DELL XPS 8930 last year (Win10-64), I created a USB thumb/Flashdrive and had the recovery of Windows put on the USB thumbdrive for recovery when I need to Repair or Reinstall Windows 10. I tried putting the thumbdrive in different ports with the same result. It doesn't recognize the backup on the drive. I tried F12 tapping and choosing Repair, but it can't find the drive. Ironically in Windows 10 now, I can click on that E: drive and see the files backed up. Perhaps I have the procedure wrong, but I'd like to know how to get to the recovery file on the drive or steps to restore or repair with the Thumbdrive. I'd like to see if Windows 10 refreshing it can help me recover from m dell's windows 10 Bluetooth not recognizing my headset. thanks. Repost me at:
