I am trying to copy text from a pdf in adobe reader but I cannot select text in the appropriate areas and I am not able to copy the text that I want to. I am able to do it in other pdf readers and the security allows for copying the text. Any suggestions on how I can get this fixed so that I can use abobe reader again?

If I double click i can get some areas to turn blue and can copy them. If I keep clicking it will turn the whole page blue but cannot copy that. I just can't use the hand tool to select the text that I want and copy it. The pdf was made by me in the appraisal software. adobe reader dc 17.009.20044

In the end, this could be the issue. It may be producing a file that Adobe has issues with. Could be a font issue or any number of things. Adobe is picky about fully compliant pdf files. But let's see that screen shot first.

I am having the same problem I think. I used to be able to right click and the whole screen would turn blue, copy it, and then put it in a Word document. Now Adobe Reader does not do that anymore. How can I fix? Thanks, Lisa

I have the same problem. I use the distiller to print stuff from chrome. it is as if big invisible boxes are on top of each other . when i try to copy/paste text it can't be selected properly and if ou paste it's some chibberrisch (see next to the following image)

You hare right. thanks. edge works without a problem. that's a new development tough. It used to work with my old laptop. I just upgraded all 2 weeks ago. I tried another pdf printer but same result.

Today I received a contact request. Nothing unusual about that, but as I try not to blindly accept contacts I took my usual look at their profile and did a little digging. This guy was a salesman for a Chinese steel company supplying rail. I don't know him but as my contact list is dominated by rail people and I work for British Steel it would make sense for him to try to 'cultivate' those contacts too. I can't blame him for trying!

However, what struck me wasn't his cheeky approach, it was what was listed on his profile that set alarm bells ringing. There was a nice long list of rail specifications that he claimed their rails met.

Whilst that list is probably impressive to some, as an ex technical guy it made me wonder, as at least one of the specifications listed is two revisions out of date (5+ years). Also they list a grooved rail specification which is unusual in that region. So I checked out the website links provided. One was dead - not a good start. The other looked quite slick but had no real content in it and no mention of grooved rails. If you can produce something that tricky then you'd certainly showcase it on your website wouldn't you? Unless of course they are simply trading them which is a possibility of course.

A copy and paste of this into a popular search engine - (Yes I realise the irony here!) revealed many different companies advertising rails with exactly the same list of specifications. I'm not saying anything dodgy is going on or that people have been plagiarising from others but I'll let the readers make up their mind as to the likelihood of the exact same content and even punctuation being used by different companies.

Other recent examples are articles on here. Again from a sales guy trying to sell railway products (Links here and here). I thought when I read it that the first text looked familiar and wasn't in the same style throughout the post. A quick copy/paste (yes - the irony again!) of text revealed the original sources here and here even down to the typos in the original, (The first originating website is well worth a read by the way). What infuriates me is people trying to pass work off as their own which blatantly isn't. I'd have had no issue at all if he'd referenced and linked back to the original source to give them credit. The fact that they are regurgitating other peoples content under their name to make them appear knowledgeable and reputable really really annoys me. It is fine to share good content, but to pass it off as your own work is just plain wrong.

Aside from the commercial (and sometimes safety) implications that such copy-cats create, there is also a social, ethical and perhaps intellectual impact too. Because it seems to be happening increasingly and with little if indeed any challenge - it starts to become more "acceptable". And if it is acceptable then why would you invest and value original thinking and ideas when it is easier to copy/paste from someone else more cheaply? Most of us use the internet to research things - whether that be what car to buy or what has been happening in the news today. But ultimately we make up our own minds (hopefully!). Imagine taking the copy-cat world to the extreme. No original thoughts and ideas, just a merry-go-round of copying ideas from others because it is cheap easy and risk-free. The whole world would stagnate!

Thanks for reading my rail-rant. I hope you have found it interesting and feel free to share it with others. For more rail related and hopefully original content then follow me. And if you ever want to talk-tech about rail then connect and drop me a line and I'll try to help.

It seems I am not immune from the tide of plagiarism sweeping the world. Adverts have been appearing on a trading website using directly copied passages of text from our own British Steel grooved rail brochure. Not only text has been stolen, they have also copied images from our previous brochures too! I know some of the claims they are making are completely false so please beware of dealing with railwayfastenings.com as not all their claims are what they seem!
